Canyon Lake Hawk’s Nest Beat the Hornet’s Nest, 20-10

Canyon Lake’s first win was their last test before district and with just enough offense to go along with a heavy dose of defense helped these Hawks, in putting together, their best complete game of the season over East Central, 20-10.

“We finally played a complete game,” Head Coach Charley Drum recounted when asked bout this East Central battle. “Those close losses came in handy….it was a 13-10 ballgame going into the 4th quarter and we have been there.”
Coach Drum continued, “I’m super proud of our kids and so you want to start jelling right before district…we’re not there yet and we still have work to do but this was a great win against a great quality 6A team.”
“There best player is their quarterback and he just ran past our secondary but how we responded because after 3 close losses our kids could have said, ‘here we go again’, but they fought there butts off and they deserved it,” Coach Drum closed by responding to how the second half started when the Hornets took just 4 plays to score to take the lead back, 10-6.
A lot of orchestrated breaks started this Hawk game against 6A East Central as a, ‘here we go again’, moment after an opening on-side kick that allowed the Hornets to go up on the Hawks, 3-0.
Good news was not allowing a touchdown after the home team reached Canyon Lake’s 22 yard line.A 7 yard loss forced a, 46 yard field goal.

The Hawks then had their first drive gaining only 4 yards that was followed with an 11 yard punt and another short field for East Central at CL’s 40 yard line.
CL’s defense shut down the Hornets for the remainder of that first half allowing 40 yards or 2.3 yards per snap.
The Hawks finally got their footing with their 3rd set of downs starting on their own 13 yard line and putting together a masterful 19 play drive and taking a, 6-3 lead going into halftime.
This would be the first time Canyon Lake had been leading going into halftime. CL still is averaging 6 points per half but this seemed different watching a swarming Hawk defense.
EC opened their 2nd half with a 4 play scoring drive and recaptured a lead before CL’s fans had time to settle in with their drink and pop-corn, 10-6.

CLHS responded again with an 11 play drive for 70 yards that was capitalized with a 13 yard 3rd down pass to Marshall McConnell that was just enough yards to convert a first down. It was 6 plays later when Chase Anderson’s 27 yard run set CL up on EC’s 13 yard line. Three plays later, Helijah Johnson punished the Hornets nest from 2 yards out and scored for what would be for the game and a, 13-10 lead.
With that vicarious 3 point lead, CL’s defense came up with THE play when Hayden Miller broke away and started for QB Vivier which led to an errant pitch and a McConnell tackle for a 19 yard loss. These Hornets would punt two plays later for The Lake’s final touchdown drive resulting in a 2 score lead, 20-10.
This drive had 13 plays and two 4th down conversions which was capped off when QB Hunter Anderson (who looked like Thigpen being hidden by the whole CL Offensive line) sneaking across the goal line from 6 yards out. Game-Set-Match!
There was no play on the Hawks clinching drive that reached more than 6 yards and the rock was shared by every back in this contest.
A finished gauntlet of 3 higher classified teams and finishing with smiles on a night knowing CL’s learning curve will be instrumental when preparing for Marble Falls for their first district schedule.
