Canyon Lake’s Slow Start Leads to Loss to Champion, 44-36
Canyon Lake started too late after falling behind 23 points before scoring to start the 2nd quarter.
Boerne Champoin would score twice more before half and enjoying what was thought a safe lead, 37-06.
Speed kills and the Chargers were able to go 77 yards on the first play and when their Charger receiver got the corner it would not take long and scoring with the first 21 seconds.
“We were not mentally sharp during their 1st quarter surge,” Head Coach Charley Drum stated. “We just can’t just show up and if we don’t respond then we will get embarrassed. This has happened in every game so far and we just have to get sharper to start the game.”
The Hawk’s mistakes continued after a missed catch on that opening kick-off and starting that series on their 3 yard line. Which led to a yard and a half penalty and a sack on CL’s next rushing attempt.
BC went ahead by 16 points after a 52 yard drive after forcing a punt on The Lake’s next possession. It took 4 plays (all by passing) having the Hawks down by 23 points with still bout 4 minutes before the end of that first forgettable period.
Canyon Lake finally broke through driving 77 yards using 11 plays, led by Justin Abbott (read twitter interview), rushing for 47 of those yards as QB Hunter Anderson burrowed to pay dirt from 3 yards out.
Abbott had 129 rushing yards for his first time to break that 100 barrier as he has been going back and forth between the JV Squad and Varsity to start this season. Abbott ran for 154 steps at that Junior Varsity win two weeks ago against Freddie and now a good game for Varsity.
Champion would score twice more before half while enjoying a, 37-6 lead while waltzing to their locker room for halftime refreshments.
There was no quit for CL as they outscored Champion 30-7 in those last two quarters and if successful on their onside kick than they had a chance to send this game into overtime.
Looking at game stats you would think the Lake might have won this contest but a home team protecting players in the 2nd half led to this Hawk blitz by racking up 547 yards which ranks 5th all time in that category.
Team Yards Year La Grange 652 2020 Fredericksburg 583 2016 Ingram 579 2009 Smithville 550 2019 Boerne Champion 547 2022
CL’s best offensive output last season was against Taylor gaining 461 yards which ranks 24th all-time. The Hawks reached 229 yards via the pass which is topped by just one team (2019 team) when Peyton McMullen passed for 263 yards.
In the suspended game with the Billies had CL with 134 yard’s passing in their abbreviated first half giving an indication that this being a rebirth of a passing game with some slot-t formations thrown in for seasoning.
If the forward pass had not been an option then this would have been more scoring for BC as CL’s air attack loosened the opposing defense enough for garnering 318 yards on the ground.
Tight-End Griffen Williams was just 8 yards shy of reaching 100 yard receiving as the only player to have 100 yards receiving since the slot-t was installed was Tanner Faris with 104 yards. That game had Faris with 115 yards on the ground as he still lays claim as the only player to top 100 yards in Hawk history to break 100 yards by receiving and running in the same game against Taylor in 2016.
You would need to go back to the 2009 season the last time the Hawks had 6 or more players catching a pass in a game.
A loss, to a school in the same district as Smithson Valley, gives CL some measuring sticks as playing larger schools enters it’s second week on a Homecoming night against 5A Division II Veterans Memorial who was also ranked in the Top 10 earlier this year. No rest but a chance for more valuable lessons being learned with one lesson that will be the main focus this week,,,,Starting a game quicker!
Canyon Lake has yet to score to open a game while giving up 37 points. With more footing, CL can go a long way, as it has been established the Hawks can score in the 2nd half this season. During those last 3 years, The Lake, has been missing in action during the 4th quarter (2020) and 3rd quarter (2021). The Hawks need to turn those tables quickly and start the game more focused so this season can eradicate having their first quarter looking like those last two season in the second half.
