Canyon Lake will be taking on the Billies from Fredericksburg who are one of two schools that have faced, The Lake, since play began 15 years ago.
An oddity with this contest playing FHS in football compared to every other sport…. has football being the only sport CL has a winning record against Freddie and that includes the Hawk Ladies as well.
So, putting this series back on track with a win is important for Canyon Lake after having these Billies winning 3 of the last 4 meetings.
Fredericksburg did not have a good, out of the box, in their game with Salado. The Eagles scored 35 points before a Billies’ field goal right under 2 minutes before half.
During the 3rd quarter, Freddie’s offense was held scoreless but did had a punt return on a short Salado punt that they returned 17 yards for their first touchdown.
The score going into that final period had FHS looking at a 43 point deficit and the only offensive TD for the Billies came with 13 seconds left in the game….giving an indication that there was no Salado starter playing for that drive.
Is Salado that good? They are picked 16th according to Texas Football Magazine in 4A Division II and that publication had these Eagles winning their district.
Looking at those first game stats, Salado beat the Billies on both sides of the ball that led to 5 punts and 3 turnovers with one leading to a score via an interception.
QB Will Degenhardt competed 29% of his passes for 92 yards and the leading rusher was Jesse Leija who ran for 76 yards on 18 carries.
Salado passed for 377 yards but with CL’s slot-t, passing might not be a weapon. So, duplicating what Salado did would be this game’s biggest question mark.
The Eagles rushed for 62 yards on 23 carries or right at 3 yards per tote. But with their pass doing the damage deducing what might happen with the run is still up in the air (pardon the pun).
The Lake did not start their first game with any fireworks (there was a burn ban in effect) and CL could not get any traction with their slot-t that had only two explosive plays until right before halftime when QB Hunter Anderson’s quarterback draw for a touchdown. Which gave CL a slimmer of hope going into halftime.
That 2nd half result saw two teams able to score a touchdown but losing that first stanza was enough for these Texans to continue their mastery over Canyon Lake.
What will Canyon Lake need to do for a win? Play a consistent game and coming out of the gate with a score on their first drive might be all that is needed. The way Freddie lost last week by being knocked out quickly might bring those week long memories back to haunt this home team.
Fredericksburg does have a lot of turnover with players this year and having that one game loss might have a different team ready to take the Hawks down.
Canyon Lake’s defense was nails last week and if that part of the game stays consistent then you have to like the odds for these Hawks to be successful this week.
The Lake had a, 10-4 record in their 2nd game on their schedule which shows this week is usually a comeback contest after a first week loss (7-8 record) after that Wimberley loss.
Time will tell and don’t forget you can get The ReSporter’s twitter updates as the game is in process!!
After the game there will be instagram interviews with players.
Let’s GO HAWKS!!
