Canyon Lake Gold team spotted the Davenport Wolves 14 points and erased that lead with opportunistic offense and a solid defense winning this close bout, 16-14.

GO HAWKS & don’t forget to VOTE!

Davenport came out of the gate with a 14 play 65 yard drive and converting two fourth downs on their way to a quick 8 point advantage.

C-Lake had a similar drive but ended up losing a fumble deep in the Wolves territory before seeing the Wolves get another score, this time taking just 2 plays on a 83 yard pass play down the middle of the field and looking invincible with a, 14-0 lead early in that 2nd Quarter.

That would end up being the visitors final scores and CL Gold would make their statement on that next possession. This time moving 69 yards using 8 plays and a Gram Simpson one yard plunge and then, Simpson, topped that score off with his two-point conversion, 8-14.

Simpson finished the night with 147 yards and 34 of those steps was on the very first play of that drive.

Reese Pipkin followed with another explosive play for 15 yards and the Hawks were quickly sitting on Davenport’s 20 yard line. Taking 6 more plays to finish this drive with a score.

The second half had CL Gold traveling 82 yards only to fumble on the Wolves’ one yard line after 15 plays and nothing to show for that work.

                        Way to Go Hawks!!

Davenport would return the favor after starting after that Hawk turnover with a 36 yard run before The Lake took a stand in stopping the Wolves on 4 plays and a then their center sailing his snap over their punter’s head for a 12 yard loss.

The Hawks would be successful on this next drive going 25 yards and this time Tristan Hallman ran in that go ahead touchdown from 10 yards out and finishing this scoring on a Hallman’s run for a 2 point conversion and lead, 16-14.

Now with 8 minutes remaining CL’s Defense would need to take another stand and the Wolves started on their 58 yards for what would be a go-ahead score.

After penetrating to CL’s 36 yard line Davenport would hit a (Joseph) Matos (wall) when he sacked the Wolve’s QB on a 4th down try but that was short lived when CL would look for a punt on their next possession only to see the snap over their punter’s head and the drama would now become intense.

                  Let’s GO HAWKS!!

Davenport now just needed to traverse 38 yards for a go ahead score with 2 minutes remaining.

In that first set of plays, the Wolves, converted a 4th down play when the QB ran to CL’s 4 yard line.

Matos would have another key tackle, this time a 3 yard loss, that put Davenport needing 7 yards for their score with just 3 more possible snaps.

The Wolves would be out of timeouts at this juncture and their next run reached the 3 yard line with time becoming an issue being below 40 seconds.

A play for no gain had the clock approaching 10 seconds and one last play and still needing 3 yards then a quick snap and a credit to the whole Hawk defensive line converging on Davenport’s running back for a 3 yard loss and win for the Good Guys!!

Cayden Toons, Gram Simpson & Joseph Matos!

A 14 point comeback that had CL’s defense, after allowing Davenport to open the game with two straight scores, stopped in their next 5 drives without giving up any points.

It was a CL Freshman Golden classic and a well deserving win, 16-14.
