Mountain Valley’s 7th B Team have Awakening in Win over Canyon MS, 22-20

MVMS 7th B team on winning drive against Canyon MS, 22-20 final.

Mountain Valley’s 7th B team was awakened and carried an unprecedented comeback and win over Canyon MS, 22-20. Those 22 points were the most scored this season against Canyon MS.

                   Way to GO HAWKS!!

“Seventh Grade is always different on who’s going to step up,” Coach Ray Amaro said. “Who is going to answer the call and we showed a lot of resiliency and they keep learning… this was a fun game to be a part of!”

The Hawks opened with a 5 play drive covering 48 yards giving Mountain Valley a quick, 8-0 lead. This drive was highlighted when Joseph Hernandez used his speed in covering a 27 yard run to CMS 10 yard line. Two plays later, Walker Galvan sneaked across the goal line with the aid of his good offensive line’s push for the goal line. Hernandez capped the scoring with two point conversion for a, 8-0 lead.

The Cougars’ were good on their first possession too, going 57 yards on a 9 play drive, scoring on a pass play but their conversion fell incomplete which still had a Hawk 2 point advantage, 8-6.

The next five possessions was a tennis match with volleys but no more scoring going into halftime.

Opening the second half, the Cougars would score on three explosive plays and that last one was a 14 yard pass and catch play resulting in a, 12-8 CMS lead.

                     Let’s Go Hawks!!

The Cougars received a fluke (the kick bounced off a Hawk players shoe) kick-off recovery and would quickly score again…this time on a 15 yard run and now with a 2 point conversion that gave these visitors a two score lead, 20-8.

MV’s Hawks would drain the rest of the 3rd quarter clock on a 10 play drive that was culminated on a 9 yard Mason Hallmark run and with another Hernandez two point run conversion Mountain Valley would be within striking difference, 20-16 with 4:47 still left on the clock.

After being unsuccessful on a Hawk on-side kick the Cougars, who had not been stopped yet during this 2nd half, would only need 49 yards to put this game away. CMS had averaged 9.5 yards per snap going into this drive and giving little hope for a Hawk comeback.

              Make it count Hawks!!

A 4 yard run started this series of downs and then a Hawk sack left these Cougars needing 11 yards to continue to milk the clock.

Another run, this time for 6 yards had CM needing a 5 yard play to continue but that was when Caleb McNair broke through the line on a passing play which culminated in a 7 yard sack and a change of possession.

“Caleb (McNair) is a smart kid,” Coach Amaro said matter of factly. “He lived up to connecting and being at the right spot.”

The Hawk Offense would take it from there and QB Walker converting a 4th and one helped with a new set of downs but still needing 45 yards for that go ahead score.

Little used Hallmark would convert his next run for another Hawk first down and now time was becoming a precious commodity. MV was on the 25 yard line with little over one minute remaining.

A fumble and 3 yard gain by Addison Sprayberry on his recovery and then a 19 yard run and score by, Hallmark’s Card made a statement, for a nice 19 yard run to pay-dirt that secured MVMS’s first win this season.

Caleb McNair, Joseph Hernandez & Mason Hallmark are all smiles after beating the Cougars, 22-20!

“Hallmark during practice has been under the radar,” Coach Amaro stated. “But he had been working hard and it was time to give him a shot and he led us to a score. I asked him to bounce outside because their defense was crashing in on that play.”

An awakening might allow this group of players to realize that their team can compete on a whole different level now and a chance to realized that potential in next week’s contest.

Way to Go Hawks!!
