MVMS 7th A Team Used Stingy Defense in Win over Canyon MS, 16-6
The Mountain Valley Hawks 7A’s stingy defense was enough for a 10 point win over Canyon Middle School, 16-6 on Tuesday night at the CLHS Hawk Nest.
“The kids responded and we repeat our offense and defense in practice and then repeat again,” Coach Duane McBride repeated. “We tell them to don’t give up…hit them in the mouth….and then pound them. That was what we did tonight.”
MVMS had a rough start when the Cougars started this game with a successful on-side kick and a chance to score first starting at the mid-field stripe.
But that Hawk stingy defense would respond by forcing a fumble on CMS first play and regaining the ball and chance to get that first score.
That would not be in the cards after reaching the Cougar’s 4 yard line on a lost fumble it was the 2nd down play that was halted with no damage.
On CMS Cougars’ next drive it was doomed when MV sacked their QB for a 10 yard loss that forced a punt. The good news for these visitors that saw their 48 yard punt help in changing what usually would be a short punt based on past 7th graders and that punt put MV 58 yards away from their first score.
That was made up quickly when Archer Miller raced 57 yards to the one yard line where QB Knox Ford would sneak into the end zone for what would be a winning touchdown after also calling his number for that all important two point conversion and 8 point lead. A winning touchdown after this stingy defense holding tight in stopping these Cougars 3 times inside their 10 yard line.
The Hawk’s defense was strong on CMS’ next two drives by holding their visitors on the 4 and 1 yard line and no score.
On the Cougar’s drive to the 1 yard line, CMS had a break away 48 yard run that looked like a sure touchdown before Nicholas Alvaro Perez with his tackle leaving them 10 yards short from their ultimate goal (line).
A 4th down stop at the one yard line ended the first half and a Mountain Valley lead, 8-0.
Canyon Middle School opened the 2nd half with a score by going 46 yards using 6 plays with that final play covering 21 yards on a swing pass that closed the gap but still leaving the Hawks with the lead, 8-6 lead after a failed running play for their point after.
MVMS would drain 6 minutes off the 3rd period and scored on the Hawks second play of their final quarter when Miller scored 7 yards out. It was QB Knox pass to Kobe Halverson converting another two point attempt which would give MV a two score lead with 6:53 remaining, 16-6.
That Hawk drive was highlighted when Halverson got a pitch and then found Miller for 47 yards catch that converted a 2nd down and needing 18 yards to continue this drive. Now, MV was set-up at the Cougar’s 28 yard line. That was the Hawks second pass on this day and this one worked and helped favor MVMS.
The Cougars would reach the Hawk’s 9 yard line but this would be the 3rd time and final time as this game would close with a MV’s defense came out as a stingy host and win.
With time being securely on the side of Mountain Valley, Miller would get his second reception on the night….this time the throw came via a Cougars QB and that interception allowed the home team to run out the clock for a win, 16-6.
A bend but don’t break Hawk Defense was good enough for this win and now Mountain Valley will be home next week when they welcome Oak Run Middle School to the Hawk Nest!!
Way to Go Hawks!!
