Canyon Lake will start District 13-4A play this Friday with Marble Falls as both teams come into this opening curtain with losing records.
Those records will not be in a formula that helps in tie-breakers when this next 5 weeks are finished however and both schools will come into this battle with, 0-0 district records.
Canyon Lake won their first game two weeks ago against 6A East Central on the road with a stout defense while the Mustangs come into this opening act with a 2 game skid with their sights set on getting a win that would break CL’s 2 game winning streak in this series.
In fact, The Lake has yet to give up a touchdown to Marble Falls and both teams are taking up those final two spots in average points scored per game.
Canyon Lake will be looking into a mirror with this being two schools with the same slot-t offense.
That should not give CL fans any warm fuzzies however as the Hawks have a dismal, 0-7 record when facing a slot-t since 2013, the first year, when it was installed.
Marble Falls had their best season in a while last year in their final season with a 5A status. But that was also the year when many of those players paraded across the stage at the end of last school year to get their diplomas.
These Mustangs finished the non-district portion of their schedule with 2 wins against two schools that have yet to win and were shut-out by Fredericksburg two weeks ago, 23-0.
That same Billie team was giving The Lake all they wanted in that game that was suspended right before half and CL had a slim, 6-0 lead at the time.
Canyon Lake’s Senior class is in tact this year with the advent of last year’s JV team that has joined now and with those players who moved up have a distinction of winning a district championship every year they have suited up from Mountain Valley Middle School on up.
That included a Championship as Freshman against Liberty Hill and then two straight seasons playing Junior Varsity. In fact, whether these players were on the ‘A’ or ‘B’ teams during those middle school years then it was an automatic championship.
That resolve will hopefully become a reality this season with a chance of adding up to six straight campaigns that have a district trophy being hoisted above their heads!!
Should be a good game and Go Hawks!!
