Griffen Williams Hits Home Run Signing for Blinn College in Baseball
Canyon Lake celebrated this past Wednesday when Griffen Williams set pen to paper for a chance to go to Blinn JC that will continue his career in baseball next year.
Blinn College is a farm team that sends players to the Major Leagues (Farm Teams) or they move to a 4 year college to finish their collegiate career.
Williams has been a mainstay for The Lake these past two years as this young man has set a standard for other Hawks with his power, glove and on the pitching mound.
On the All-Time list, Williams ranks first in RBI’s (84) & Home Runs going into this next season with 15 that is 9 more than the next batter.
Williams is also ranks in the top 10 in Hits (7th- 71), Doubles (2nd- 17) and ranks 1st in Slugging Percentage, (.771) and has a salty .406 career batting average.
Williams has also made a good case on the mound by ranking 7th with an average of 7.77 strikeouts per 7 inning games and has coupled that with a 4th ranking in allowing walks, 2.22 per a 7 inning game.
A couple more accolades has Williams needing 9 more strikeouts to reach 100 and the best barometer on the value of a pitcher standing at 7th place with an ERA (Earned Run Average) at 2.71.
Tami Williams (Mom) speaking on behalf of the family stated, “We are proud of him, as this has been one of he goals and dreams…It was a big decision and he did a lot of work and investigating and he found a coach (Dusty Hart) he felt comfortable with.
Of course we are happy because it will be close to home and his scholarship helps and I know that college means freedom and I want him not to lose his sense of what he is working for.”
On what was a defining thought when thinking back to his younger years? “David (Husband) would always walk around the house and throw his (wedding) ring up in the air and catch it…yes he has lost it 2 or 3 times but I remember Griffen, when he was real young, following his dad and he started throwing a ball the same way and he would catch it over and over. We had broken things in the house but that started his passion with any type of ball.”
“I grew up on cheer teams but never knew how much playing around the house as my boys have grown older… we had a batting cage installed and that was upgraded with lights and he would be out there till late at night….all I could here was that, ‘bing’ of a bat hitting a ball till late at night and I would finally have to say, ‘Go to BED!!’”
Now that ‘bing’ sound will represent a scholarship and a chance for Griffen to fulfill one of his dreams.
Mason (little brother) has been on the wrong side of getting the better of his big-Big-BIg-BIG brother but did relate a chance of getting his brother with his orbi gun and all he could do is laugh while running around trying to escape the wrath of Griff. What happened, “It wasn’t very good,” Mason remembered.
Griffen Williams gives his thoughts, “This took a lot of hard work and it came down to Coach Hart. I had visited up in Denison at Grayson College and then he took the job coaching for Blinn and so that is why I decided to go there.”
This school is known for sending players to a 4 year college and minor leagues, “Yes and that would be my dream!”
On his thoughts of coming to Canyon Lake, “This has been good for me and I have enjoyed my stay here but we are not finished yet.”
Griffen is not finished and still has many more items to check off before his trek to Blinn JC.
Finishing his football career first which hopefully will go several more weeks….then this young man will take to the hardwood to hone in on his basketball motif before his last year of seeing if he might be able to get more records on the diamond and another Hawk run in the post-season.
Way to go Griffen and the Hawk Nation will be following you as you set the stage for that next stage of life.
Who knows, you might get into some extra innings!! Go Hawks & Go Buccaneers!!
