This will be Canyon Lake’s 5th Area round contest and they have compiled a 1-4 record to date during this round of post-season play.
That win was the same year CL won a district title (2017) which matches this season’s mantra and Calhoun will be a hard team to read to say the least.
A School that started this season on a 7 game losing streak and since that overtime loss to Pleasanton has seemed to found their footing and presently sport a 4 game winning streak.
So a logical question would be finding what happened that now has this Sandcrab team turning the tables from losing to winning.
Opponents for those first 7 games presently sport a combined, 46-25 win-loss records which would be a reason for starting their season on a down note.
Calhoun’s offense was scoring 22 points per outing during that 7 game skid and have increased that output by 9 points. On the defensive side of the ball, the Sandcrabs are holding their opponents at 17.5 points and to start the season were giving up right at 25 points per game.
That is a 17 point differential between these two streaks which has proven to be something different in the pre-game meal that these Sandcrabs like.
With a little more research the only logical explanation would be on the menu that has these crabs sitting in a Krusty Krab’s diner when their winning streak began. During their losing streak this team must have been dining at the Chum Bucket.
That will help in knowing what Canyon Lake will need to do to get Calhoun back to the Chum Bucket and steal that secret recipe.
Seriously, a more simplistic answer has seen the change of quarterbacks Jace Campos who started this season and now these Crabs use Alex Parker.
That has allowed this team to use Campos strictly as a running back where he has excelled this season.
The Sandcrabs pass less than the Hawks and it is not uncommon to see 3 or less passes thrown during a contest. Here is the rundown of rushing stats for this crew of crabs.
Player Yds Ave (per game)
Jayce Campos 827 92.0
Tony Hensley 541 77.3
Darrik Salinas 440 73.3
Alex Parker 304
On the defensive side of the ball the Hawks will see Linebacker Edgar Munoz who averages 9 tackles a game. Defensive back Cesar Aguilar totals right at 7 tackles from that position.
Darrik Salinas averages 5.6 tackles and leads the team with 4 interceptions.
This game has the potential of playing into Canyon Lake’s strong suit which is defending the run (123.7 yards per game) and seeing a team that is more one dimensional than the Hawks.
A battle that could come down to turnovers as there will be very few possessions for each contestant with few passes and incompletions stopping the clock hence a game of two teams that will look to drain the clock with their long drives.
This game is in Floresville that had a Hawk Girl’s Soccer team walloped Jones Beeville, 6-1 last year on their post-season run and now The Lake’s Football team will see if that type of game might materialize with a chance of going another round of post-season action.
But the simpler answer will come on sending this Sandcrab team back to the Chum Bucket.
GO HAWKS!!
