Canyon Lake loaded up with many accolades for this year’s All-District 13-4A Division 1 awards.

                  Way to GO HAWKS!!

“It was a good year,” Head Coach Charley Drum started. “We continued to make a run in the post-season for 10 straight years and we were district champs and you can have only one team that can do that.”

“Our senior class exemplified grit and especially in that Lampasas game and came back in the Burnet and Taylor games. We accomplished getting two gold balls (going 2 rounds in the post-season) and we got two out of our 3 goals.”

CL’s football team is the first Hawk team sport to have two district championships and each of those years a key ingredient was having a senior class filled with players that had a lot of skins on the wall.

The Class of ’23 will be able to boast having a District Champion at every grade level with that streak starting during their Mountain Valley 7th grade in both A & B squads. That continued at the High School level from their Freshman campaign with that culmination exemplified during their senior year.

Helijah Johnson was voted the Overall District MVP this year after compiling 1307 rushing yards and finishing 2nd with 267 receiving yards this season.

                     Way to Go Hawks!!

Add his defense as one of the Hawk Linebackers would only make this decision a no-brainer. On defense Johnson finished with 36 tackles with 3 for loss and 2 interceptions.

There are many district foes on the defensive side of the ball that can still show the bruises administered coming from Mr. Johnson.

James Garza joined Johnson on the offensive backfield by making the 1st Team squad as a Fullback. Garza just missed the 1000 mark on the Freshman team last season after an injury in the Hawk’s final contest. This year after being called up from the Junior Varsity gained 725 yards for a 6 yards per carry average.

Johnson can also thank an array of Offensive Lineman who helped in those yards gained starting with Cory Bowers who was an unanimous choice as the Offensive Lineman of the Year.

                    Let’s Go Hawks!!

Adrian Duque was another CL’er that made the Superlative Awards as the Defensive MVP and he was followed by Defensive Lineman of the Year in Andrew Miller.

Duque led CL with 90 tackles and 13 were tackles for loss while Miller was 3rd in tackles with 61 and 8 were for a loss.

Hayden Baker tho injured to end the season made a good impression with his 35 tackles and had 2 sacks and 5 tackles for a loss making First Team Defensive lineman.

The Superlative Awards has 9 categories and The Lake placed the 4 Hawks above in those slots.
