Canyon Lake used some timely free throws in a must win game against Navarro, 57-48.

Way to Make it Count Hawks!!

This contest had many subplots that had a Hawk team that started their shooting sinking 8 of 13 shots in their first quarter and forging to a 14 point lead, 22-8 after those first 8 minutes.

The Lake kept that same torrid pace and ran that lead to 22 points (31-9) when Marshall McConnell’s short jumper for two points came with 3:22 remaining before halftime.

“The last time we played like this was in our game against Hallettsville when we made 13 three pointers,” Head Coach Monte Cole remembered. “But that was during the regular season and not a district game and I knew it would not be the same.”

Coach Cole’s last statement would be the catalyst for another plot as these Panthers would come out of halftime and were able to work flawlessly bringing that deficit down to just two points (38-36) to end the 3rd quarter with CL scoring only two points via free throws from McConnell that came with 2:28 in that period.

Navarro would take their first lead starting the 4th quarter on a 3-pointer and now what was once a comfortable 22 point advantage became a game that had the Hawks biting their finger nails as this scenario and end result had not turned out well during this season.

                   Way to Go Hawks!!

Mario Aguilar who finished with 14 points got the lead back a minute later on his drive to the basket but NHS would respond with a basket of their own a minute later leading, 41-40.

After Aguilar’s scored on one out of two from the charity stripe to tie the game… the Panthers would garner their largest lead with 4:32 remaining in this battle with a bucket and leading, 43-41.

Griffen Williams went to the line with the score, 51-46 Hawks and sank 4 consecutive free throws that gave the separation needed in this win.

In those final 4 minutes the Hawks would outscore the home team, 16-5 or basically finish this contest like they started when they opened this game scoring the first 11 points.

Canyon Lake shot 50% from the floor by attacking the paint with an aggressive offense and some timely outside makes.

Aguilar (14) and Jaxson Jeter’s 13 points led the Hawks in scoring with Jeter finishing with 4 assists and 4 steals. Jeter’s 17 free throws was 2nd in all-time number of attempts for a game trailing Christian Pena who made 17 of 19 back during the 2010 season against Boerne.

It will still be an uphill battle and after an off date this Friday, Canyon Lake will take on Fredericksburg at home and a win can even up these two schools.

The Hawks will need a wins over Davenport or Bandera to realize a chance for a post-season date.
