Dam Finally Breaks in the Hawk’s Win Over John Paul II, 3-2

Canyon Lake Soccer win Harlandale Tournament after, 3-2 win over John Paul II.

The Hawk’s first game on Saturday was pitted against Judson and  The Lake was able to hold this Rocket team scoreless. It was their first scoreless game this season as Judson was averaging 5 goals per contest.

                      Let’s GO HAWKS!!

The Lake scored within the first 10 minutes and never looked back in this Semi-Final Harlandale Tourney.

That goal was a Savanna Olberholtzer to Maddie Olberholtzer combo at the 20:51 mark of the first half.

Maddie Olberholtzer had a break away goal with 3:22 left before halftime and that provided some cushion for a chance to advance to the final game.

That last goal for the Hawks was scored by Savanna Olberholtzer with an assist from Shelby Rasor that was scored halfway through that 2nd Half and a final score, 3-0.

There was one last chance for Judson to spoil a Hawk shut-out when a penalty kick was called while time was running out. Goalie Kimberley Bell was able to keep the shut-out in tact when her outstretched arms were able to push the ball away and a, 3-0 victory.

    Hawk Proud

“I don’t have a good record in winning those, as most of the time, it is a guessing game,” Bell said eloquently. “But I was right that time!!”

It was CL’s 3rd shut-out this season as this is the first time the Hawks have started a season with a 5 game winning streak.

—————————————————————————

That Canyon Lake winning streak reached six in their final championship battle. CL  was a first time resident to this Harlandale Tournament and during their first 50:59 minutes of this battle the Hawks had come up empty in scoring goals.

Maddie Olberholtzer getting congrats after tying score with 2:51 to play. Hawks win, 3-2.

John Paul II was the opponent who had won this tourney last year and has had two State Championships in TAPPS in the past 3 seasons and that tweener year they finished 2nd.

A well established program that was also the first team this season to have a lead over the Hawks and were enjoying a, 2-0 halftime lead.

It was that same score at the 9:01 mark of the 2nd half when Maddie Oberholtzer started batting away at that dam with her kick that caught the upper left side of the net that stopped the longest CL scoring drought this season and drew Canyon Lake within one goal and in range of at least tying this contest.

Canyon Lake had just missed on several shots on goal during this battle and were coming up just short again and again. The Lake was applying offensive pressure through much of this game.

The Guardians’ scored their first goal at the 21:08 mark and then added to a Hawk deficit with another goal right before halftime, 3:03 which would put CL in a spot being down and needing a comeback for the first time this season.

Canyon Lake has used their speed throughout this young campaign but that speed was being blocked by the JP’s goalie and also their defense on many occasions.

The Hawks did have a point blank penalty kick a few minutes after the Guardians first score but to no avail as that was a consistent theme during this first half and what turned out to be 2/3rds of that 2nd Half. Canyon Lake still found a clock that was quickly becoming a foe as time had dipped below a 10 mark and CL’s dam not showing any sign of breaking and needing to still keep their defense strong while hoping for a break from that scoring drought Dam.

Emily Pena loving Soccer after Hawk’s winning Harlandale Tourney!!

One instance had Emily Pena with a direct free kick from 25 yards out that hit the cross bar and then bounced back to Pena. This time her kick was good but due no other player touching that free kick it was ruled a no goal.

The game was a grind but CL  finally had a break when Maddie Olberholtzer scored with 9:01 remaining and then CL’s next goal came with 2:51 remaining which Maddie O’ was true to form.

John Paul II would respond and had a chance with a corner kick with right at 1 minute in regulation but the ball went wide and Maddie Pipkin took over and dribbled down the far sideline that had most of the Guardians chasing.

Pipkin was able to break to midfield and then found Savanna Olberholtzer who dribbled past the Goalie and then had an open net for a final score, 3-2 with the clock showing 44 seconds and little time for JP to stage a serious threat to tie the game.

“We played with a lot of grit there in the last few minutes,” Head Coach Kara Stracener said. “We had not had a battle like this and this was a good challenge for us and it was good for us as we go into our next tournament.”

                         GO HAWKS!!

Coach Stracener continued, “The girls new how close we were and then the other team had a corner (kick) and then Maddie Pipkin dribbled past a lot of people and laid it out for Savanna (Olberholtzer) and then a touch around the keeper and a finish….it was amazing and I was in disbelief for a brief minute and I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, I can’t believe we came back from being down, 2-0 after being behind for the whole game. And then scoring 3 goals in the last 9 minutes and I didn’t know that they had it in them…but we did!!”

A must see game due to having just one non-district home game will happen January 10th with the first kick at 7:00pm at the Hawk Nest. Burnet (5-0) will be the opponent and this school that has allowed just one goal this year.

The Lady Bulldogs made the Region III Tournament last season and are returning 13 players from that squad.

Good game to see as these type of contests will give The Lake a good test as they prepare for District 26-4A which is loaded with some salty teams. (Look below for up to date records.)

And Way To Go HAWKS!!
