At First Glance Canyon Lake Winter Sports

The ReSporter would like take a look at how CL’s round-ball sports have fared this season.

                Way to go Hawks!!

At First Glance: The Lady Hawks had expectations of having a more successful year but after losing just one senior from last year’s team would indicate that a climb up would be a high probability.

Then seeing several seniors putting their talents in other sports gutted much of the roster. That resulted in a team that is actually younger than the one fielded last year and going through those same rigors experienced or we call it Ground-Hog Day!

A new coach (Jeter) which resulted in a much harder schedule that resulted in more losses than the year before.

Growing Pains is taking a whole new realization again for a team that is actually a Junior Varsity team playing against varsity squads.

Lady basketball will have 3 remaining games before another off-season of work leading to  improvements.

Where They Stand: Players that are climbing the charts!

Elder Statesman Junior Sofia George ranks 5th in total points scored (655) and Sophomore Reece Coburn is perched at 14th with 416 points.

In Coburn’s last contest she passed Reagan Heun by 2 after making 14 free throws and shot 16 (0.875 %) from the line.

George will end this year in 5th place in field goals made and has 34 blocks putting her at 10th all-time. Sophomore Mya Vorhis (50 blocks) resides in 6th place.

Coburn entered the top-10 with 81 assists and if she doubled what she has done in her first two seasons would be in 3rd on that list. Vorhis has put her name at 10th place with 343 rebounds and would finish in 2nd all-time if she doubled her first two years.

Coburn (91) sank 14 free throws in her last game and is now at 11th place and still chasing George (112) who has locked down 9th on that list and could 7th with 8 more makes this year.

                     Way to GO HAWKS!!

Want more? George (83 – 4th) and Coburn (38 – 9th) passed JV Coach Char Hutson (30) this season as Coach is hanging on in 10th place. Sophomore Marley Christian is the closest to Coach Hutson needing 11 more to oust her on that coveted Top-10 accolades.

Steals has George (147) in 8th place and Vorhis (120) needs 8 more to place 10th and passing Amber West (127) who graduated 2011 season. Coburn has 99 steals and should make this list next year but she would still be chasing her teammates.

Now all the CL Lady Basketball team needs to do is get older (experience) so this coming campaign would have an opportunity to lower the steepness of their uphill climb.

Canyon Lake’s Boys are 1-2 these last 2 weeks and those two losses were similar with their opponent scoring the winning bucket in the last 5 seconds of regulation.

The Hit-Man is NOT a non-Contact Sport!

First a convincing win over Navarro (57-48) and then two rematches as the 2nd round of district play got going.

Fredericksburg eaked out a double overtime game in that first round and then taking a loss by one point (38-39) at home in disappointing manner.

The Billies have a 19-8 record.

Davenport had a different flavor after a 30 point loss at home to the Wolves that was coupled by a road loss and once again the winning shot had less that 5 seconds on a 3 point play and final, 48-49 loss.

Doing the math, The Lake, went on the road and played well enough for a win to a team that had already demolished the Hawks by 30 points, 66-36.

The Wolves sport a 19-9 record.

                  Let’s GO Hawks!

Coach Monte Cole loves defense and that part of their game was pivotable in this close encounter. Offense can come and go but Defense can always be a given if the players come into play focused….

There will not be a playoff spot this season but hope can be spelled with capital letters now with a group of players seeing fruits from their labor and having a chance to improve as the season finishes as well as looking into the future with a good off-season of work.

Yes, losses but based on the past couple of seasons these results might have been a much larger margin to put it mildly.

Canyon Lake’s are Rising!!

Go Hawks!!
