Hawk Boy’s Track & Field is a Marathon not Sprint

Canyon Lake Boys Track team improved which would be a given for the Varsity after scoring 5 points in a weighted field of larger schools the week before.

The Hawk’s Junior Varsity was in a faster lane (albeit getting more points that came in the form of long distance events) and scoring a respectable 135 points and finishing in 2nd place at the Panther Relays.

Take look at points scored based on grouping the events:

              Junior Varsity
Sprints: 100-200-400 meter 19 points
Long Distance: 800-1600-3200 meter 52 points
Hurdles: 110-300 meter 10 points
Relays: 100-200-400 20 points
Field Events: Long Jump-Triple Jump 32 points
             Discus-Shot Put-Pole Vault

               Way to go ‘FAST’ Hawks!!

That has never happened in the history of Hawk Track & Field where 3 events for distance leading the other 4 groupings of events.

Going a little deeper has the Relays being an event that has a 1st place worth 20 points and looking at the field events that encompasses 6 chances for amassing points.

Yes, scoring 135 points is a good amount but that separation that the Texans had came from scoring in every grouping that is mentioned above.

Now, there is one other variable needed to put a frame around this picture. CL’s cross country, under the direction of Coach Schroeder, has been improving and a one other tidbit was a move-in that has the ability to break every record in these 3 events named Layton Hemann.

This move-in has already set the all-time best in the 3200 meter in the first meet and with distance an improvement is not measured in tenths of a second as witnessed by his beating Luke Mendez’s mark of 10:51.15 by 8 seconds. There will be more of that coming as this season matures.

Because of Hemann’s move-in status this Junior is not able to compete for the Varsity thus setting Hawk records on the Junior Varsity stage.

             Way to Go FASTER Hawks!!

Hemann’s not alone with CL’s distance events becoming a strength for the Varsity also.

Aleksandur Villavicencio making his mark last season qualifying for the State Cross Country who was able to break the 3200 previous record by 4 seconds.

The Lake scored 22 points in the JV 3200 run with Hemann’s 1st place followed by Jackson Alvarez 2nd place and little (actually larger) brother Dionysio Villacencio scoring 4 points of that 22 total.

Hemann finished 1st in the 800 run and 2nd place was Jacob Price finishing 12 seconds later. Dionysio (saving finger cramps from typing Dionysio’s & Alek’s full name) had a 2nd place finish in the mile and Alvarez with another 2nd place finish.

Tristan Schenk finished 2nd in the Varsity 3200 meter run following Alek giving CL 22 points scored in those long distance runs.

Harris Gilliam was the high point scorer for the JV with 26 points while participating in the maximum of 5 events for the Hawks. Hemann finished with 22 points.

Other 1st Place finisher’s on the JV squad was Joseph Matos in his 400 meter sprint and Chris Taber who finished 1st with his discus throw.

Along with Alek’s 1st place in the 3200 run, Coby Mickey continues to pace himself in the pole vault as this young man is looking to have a repeat visit to Austin in this category.

Canyon Lake will be hosting a Track Meet this Thursday and a chance to see some incredible athletes working on their craft to represent this community and school.

Way to GO FAST Hawks!!
