CL Hawks Finish Week with, 4-1 Record
Canyon Lake finished this last week’s tourney with just one loss to El Paso Franklin and are now working on a 3 game winning streak heading into district play this Tuesday when Fredericksburg comes to town.
The Lake found some pitchers that can come in handy as receivers and using that element will add some added depth to a deep staff.
Since the Robstown win at the Sinton Tournament, Canyon Lake has won 5 of their last 6 contests and all but one of those games being decided 3 or less runs.
Good news was using a ‘closer’ that preserved wins four of those battles and holding that lead for a win.
Roman Gonzales was next pitcher up in the final game with El Paso High when CL had a, 1-0 lead when winner Luke Roskin left the game with that one run lead and had Gonzales with a two inning solid finish with striking out 2 and not giving up a hit. In facing 6 batters, only one, had a full-count leaving no doubt of continuing the domination Roskin had started.
In his last two games, Roskin has pitched 11.2 innings and has given up 4 hits- 3 walks while striking out 18 batters.
John Gulley was recorded a save in that first game and Gonzales went 2 innings with his stint.
“We threw a lot of strikes,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla deduced. “Our defense is getting better but our offense is struggling. We have our first district game Tuesday ready or not!”
District 27-4A’s schedule will have 3 games with each school with the first set as single contests and then the schedule will finish with each week having a team played twice.
Fredericksburg will be that first, out of the box, battle which will be a home game. The Billies have crafted a, 5-4 record and just one of those games was pitted against a team (Elgin 3-5) with a losing record.
Coach Escamilla’s comment on bats not producing has been softened with some solid arms with a team, 1.42 earned run average (era) and those 3 losses to a 6A squad and two from the 4A classification and each of those schools have a combined, 19-0 record.
A team .257 batting average and an improving defense will have a magnifying glass focused on teams when district games are played. CL is playing with fire when one of those 3 elements is working as it is well know that one error at the right time can spell doom in a victory or loss.
Canyon Lake will finish with their Comal Clash Tournament starting on Thursday with a 9:30am start against SA Wagner and then a 7:30 clash with Flour Bluff. Another two games on Friday with a night cap double header when London’s bridge comes falling down at 5:00pm start followed by East Central.
Saturday will have a 12 noon start against a seeded team.
In that final, 1-0 win over El Paso, Canyon Lake scored what would be the winning run when hot hitting Hayden Baker has a one-out double that was followed with a walk for Griffen Williams and then Carter Williams single scoring that run.
A lot of home games for the local folk to take in some baseball CL style as this week starts district and 5 games for more auditioning for with bats for Hawk players to wedge into a role as this season gets ready for finishing out with another chance to Go High Hawks!!
