Hawk’s First Seed after Comeback Win over East Central, 5-4
Canyon Lake had two comebacks during Friday’s Comal Clash competition ending with a tie and win.
The tie was against London, 4-4 a team that won the 3A State Championship last year and a tie coming against 6A East Central, 5-4.
Tournaments are a different scenario than other seasonal quests based on the amount of games that are played in a short period of time. That formula had an added variable for this Comal Clash when CL started their week with a district bout.
That meant the Hawks used their ace (Griffen Williams) which will limit his usage and with another game on Saturday at 12:30 against Corpus Christi Moody, Canyon Lake, will be patching the pitching mound with some new faces to get through another game.
This situation will require those other two parts of the trifecta (fielding & batting) to be more effective to realize a win.
The Good News? CC Moody has the same situation which can make these games a hodge-podge of activity for players who are still in an audition stage to show the coaching staff that they deserve a more active roll during the upcoming district slate.
Case and point was seeing Roman Gonzales coming into last night’s game against East Central that had The Lake already looking at a 4 run deficit.
Gonzales pitched 4.1 innings of shut-out relief which gave CL their chance for an eventual comeback win.
A Griffen Williams two-run homer in the 3rd inning got the Hawks within 2 runs, 4-2 and then clutch pitching from Gonzales turned into clutch hitting when Carter Williams and Brayden Welch each had consecutive two out hits giving CL this win.
Luke Roskin was called on for the final out with the bases loaded and Hawk comeback.
The London game used some dancing from Welch who scored on a sacrifice fly after reaching base by being hit by a pitch. Brody Ross’ sacrifice bunt moved Welch into scoring position and then stealing 3rd base and a Dane Sweet fly-ball scoring with a dance at home plate for Welch.
The play was a bang-bang affair when the catcher missed his tag and Welch’s slide had him passing home plate requiring, that dance, to reach the plate and tie the score. That tied score stood and due to a timed game this battle ended.
CL with a win over East Central was the 1st seed in their pod and finishing this tourney starting at 12:30pm against Corpus Christi Moody.
Come out and enjoy a sun baked afternoon of baseball.
Go Hawks!!
