Hawk Football is Around the Corner

Canyon Lake Football will have a chance for repeating as the District Champions after last year’s team raised the flag last season with an unblemished record.

                 Let’s GO HAWKS!!

Achieving that goal will not be an easy task after seeing 27 Seniors graduating and leaving many holes to be filled this season.

The ReSporter will have a 3 article series with Head Coach Charley Drum with a more in depth evaluating the offense & defense.

Understanding that there are several players that have been waiting their turn to show-off after standing on the sideline for a chance to make a mark.

This year’s Seniors have had some accomplishments during their sub-varsity time as well as those who participated in last year’s district run.

This 3-part series will start with the defense/offensive line which had a lot of Hawks graduating. Three of those lineman will continue their career in college.

   Have Another Great Season Hawks!!

Sonny Bentley, Brett Harwell, and Andrew Miller were those players, “We had an experienced and loaded set of players…so much so, that we could keep Bentley and Harwell just on the offense side for most of the season,” Coach Drum said.

Larger schools have a luxury of having more players that can specialize on defense or offense. That left the Hawks with enough players for having a chance to rest while their offense or defense was on the field.

That luxury will not be present this year after 12 lineman graduated…so, looking at last year’s roster shows 5 players that are returning.

On what Coach Drum will be looking to do to plug all these holes, “We are going to have to be more creative with our lack of bigs….We will be looking for size but we did have (Andrew) Miller last year and he had great quickness and tenacity so finding those type of attitudes of being aggressive…they will need to be able to react and show discipline will be our goal this year.”

With tongue in cheek, Coach Drum quipped, “We will be having more personnel meetings…especially for those offensive sets.”

                      Go Lake!!

Coach Drum continued his thoughts on what the coaches will be looking for as those hot August workouts commence in a few weeks, “They will need to line-up right and be ready to play and finding those 11 kids with a no quit attitude.”

“We will need assignment football on the defensive line and for the offensive line…there are more rules so we will need to see more of a football IQ and we will want them to be more disciplined. We will be having more workouts with good on good (first team against first team) so we can have more film work on.”

To put it bluntly, The Lake, will need some quick learners as this will seem, for those younger players, giving them an opportunity to see the field much earlier and a learning curve needing to be heightened.

Coach Drum closed, “We will have 3 Juniors returning (#75 James Stevens, #76 Oscar Aguilar, and #77 Jayden Huth) and they will bring some experience that we can build off of.”

That will be a good start but CL’s work will come with some bumps and bruises as these evaluations come with a magnifying glass.

(next we will have offensive skill positions)

Let’s GO HAWKS!!
