Hawks Have Wild Comeback but Come Up Short to Veterans, 43-50

Kaiden Lewis helped in CL’s 434 rushing yardage in game against the Patriots. Go Hawks1

The Lake continues to show improvement but still comes up short by 7 points to another larger school losing, 50-43 on the road in San Antonio.

                     Let’s GO HAWKS!!

A disastrous 2nd quarter that saw Veterans Memorial score 28 points would prove to be the difference after both schools finished by scoring 22 points each in that 2nd half.

“The positives that came out of tonight… we started the game really well by taking the ball away and going up 13-0….we were down by 7 at half and that was the best we have come out to start the 2nd half,” Head Coach Charley Drum stated. “We just have to clean up some stuff in the 2nd and 3rd quarters but I’m proud of the way our guys responded and it will pay off down the road.”

Coach continued, “I hate moral victories but you got to take positives and take the negatives from them and learn from them too because district starts real soon.”

On thoughts in next week’s game with 6A East Central, “Yeah, East Central will be a challenge for us but we stayed healthy tonight and it’s going to be a challenge and last year we beat East Central and went on a roll and won 6 games in a row and hopefully that will come true again.”

Go Hawks & Come Get Your Best Priced MUMS before it’s too Late!!

It was a game that started with waves of turnovers—then penalties—then with a slew of points in this wild affair.

After the Hawks started their first drive going 75 yards on 4 plays when Carter Williams started this drive with a 25 yarder and finished on a 47 yard romp to the end zone and a quick Hawk, 7-0 lead.

That was when the first wave of turnovers would become prevalent for the remainder of the first quarter:

Patriots: Fumbled on their first snap for a 7 yard loss that had CL with a chance to increase that touchdown lead.
Hawks: Drove to the 8 yard line before a fumble ended that opportunity.
Patriots: Fumbled on their first snap on a 1 yard gain.
Hawks: Needing 22 yards started with a one yard rushing play and then an interception.
Patriots: Ran 5 plays before throwing an interception and Williams returned that pass 42 yards to their 46 yard line.

The crowd was showing signs of sea-sickness after those waves but CLake was able to increase their lead when they calmed those seas after Justin Abbott’s last two runs went for 46 yards and a Hawk, 13-0 lead.

Abbott’s first 6 carries was a pedestrian 7 yards before CL’s offensive line pitched in as #19 Abbott would end this game covering 219 ground yards with his 32 carries. It was The Lake’s 2nd game this season where a Hawk hit that coveted goal (Williams had 200 yards in earlier Billie game).

Canyon Lake had their first two-back combo going over the century mark since last year’s playoff win over Uvalde when Helijah Johnson (124) and Chase Anderson (104 yards) did the trick. In this battle, Williams stepped off 181 yards and then Abbott had 219 for a total of 400 yards.

That total is the most in Hawk history as the previous duo that had the record was 185 yards by Austin Brennan (211) and Tanner Faris’ (174 yards) in a Fredericksburg game back during that 2016 campaign.

Williams did top 200 yards of offense when adding his 28 yards receiving for 209 yards. His 42 yard interception return put this all around athlete with a good night’s work with 251 all-purpose yards.

                             Go Hawks!!

Canyon Lake would be in deep doo-doo after allowing VM to score before half for their 7 point advantage, 28-21 because this dangerous and fast offense would be receiving that 2nd half kick-off.

This Patriot team would come to the rescue in helping the Hawks when the kick-off returner ran past the kick and then had to go back to retrieve the rock. He was on the 5 yard line when he secured the ball and from their a swarm of Hawks and with Isiah Eureste being able to down the Patriot returner in the end zone as The Lake started the 2nd half with 2 points and receiving a punt against a daunting wind.

The bad news for the Home team continued with a 10 yard penalty and Hawks needing to traverse just 37 yards for another score.

      Canyon Lake ‘Hawk’ Proud!!

Abbott’s 3 plays for 28 yards to go with Williams’ 15 yarder had the Hawks with a one point lead, 29-28 within those first 2 minutes of the 2nd half.

But the Hawk defense would get whiplashed with Veteran’s next two scoring drives covered a combined for 159 yards taking 12 plays for a 13 yards per play average and quick, 43-29 lead.

That was when CL had their slot-t draining clock scoring drive that took over 7 minutes with 16 plays.

This Hawk drive had some encouraging set of plays with the first coming after CLHS had a first on the VM’s 39 yard line.

With the Ball on the Veteran's 39 yard line:
1) Movement Penalty 1st down 15 44 yard line
2) Fumble for a 1 yd loss 2nd down 16 45 yard line
3) Holding 2nd down 26 45 yard line
4) Pass Crowder-Rodriguez for 21 yards.
                           3rd down 5 34 yard line
   **Outstanding one had catch!
5) Williams 5 yard run 1st down & Score 8 plays later!

From their to the final play of this drive was vintage slot-t that had 9 plays from a yard loss to 6 yard gains and now CL being back within a touchdown with 8 minutes remaining, 36-43.

It was a short order for these Patriots as they answered with a 7 play 64 yard drive and two touchdown lead, 36-50 with still over 5 minutes remaining.

Another Slot-Drive went 75 yards taking 9 plays with a Kaiden Lewis 2 yard plunge and back within a 7 point range for a tie with a defensive stop. Which had happened once that ended the first half for the Patriots but other than that Veterans was running up and down the field. …. Literally!!

So, with a minuscule chance that a stop might be in order had CL calling for an onside kick and that gave Rylan Oppelt a perfect hit on a VM player fielding that kick and fumble recovered by Eureste was the result.

It would not pan out tho, as the Hawks, could not convert a 4th and 11 yards needed pass play that would finalize the scoring for both teams.

Another game where a Canyon Lake game topped the 1000 yards gained by both teams barrier, 1103 was earlier this season in the Billie contest. This offensive night was a combined 93 points for 4th on that all-time aggregate points scored tally.

Next game will be Thursday for CL’s Homecoming against San Antonio East Central with a hope of more improvement that can result in a win.

Let’s Go Hawks!!
