What a Difference a Week can Make as Hawks Beat Fred, 24-0
What a difference a week will make!! A team with very little production in a loss to Wimberley was turned completely around when CL’s defense shut-out Freddie and this Hawk offense used their slot-t to perfection in a dominating win.
Canyon Lake Junior Varsity and their first 3 drives were forgettable but from there on it was all Hawks as the defense pitched a shut-out while the offense waltzed with a 24 point win.
In those first 3 series the Hawks lost their starting QB Hayes Holladay to an injury on a 10 yard sack which was followed with a fumble on possession #2 and stopped shy on a fourth down deep in the Billies territory on that 3rd time with the rock.
The good news had a Lake defense forcing a 3 play and punt sequence that was followed by CL holding FHSJV turning the ball over on downs.
That was when all systems go started for a the Lake that had already suffered a shut-out to start their season.
A short Billies punt had CL setting up shop on Freddie’s 31 yard line and after 3 plays of no-yardage a jet sweep had JR Lindell with the rock and two blocks by Hawk players giving Lindell clear sailings for 31 yards and a score on this 4th down try. That would be a game-set-match TD as these Goats would be without their horns for the remainder of this contest.
Fred was showing life on their next possession covering 40 yards on the next 4 plays but then Defensive Lineman Caden Cross would put a stop to this potential momentum swing by breaking into the Goats back field for a 7 yard loss and that play resulted in another Hawk defense turning the ball over on downs to start that 2nd quarter.
A Hawk fumble stopped their next possession and Freddie missed on a field goal try as both teams retreated for a half-time of strategy with a Hawk, 8-0 lead.
That 2nd half was just what the doctor ordered when CL’s defense recovered a fumble and then the offense used the rest of the 3rd quarter with a 9 play scoring drive and a, 16-0 lead.
This drive was highlighted with a Lucas Schexnayder 35 yard run to the 10 yard line of the Billies.
Four plays later saw Gavyn Baldera converting a 1 yard run on 4th down and that double digit lead.
Two possessions later, Canon Lake recovered another fumble and would once again capitalize for 41 yards taking 6 plays for an out of reach score, 24-0.
This drive had a Simpson’s 27 yard run and then two plays later Schexnayder finished off with his run right up the middle for a 5 yard score.
The ReSporter has Instagram & Twitter interviews with Gram Simpson, JR Lindell, and Gavyn Baldera.
Canyon Lake will be back on the field at Boerne Champion this coming Thursday and a chance to continue this new found game with that old adage where a team can change more between their 1st to 2nd outing.
What a Difference a week made and now with another week this team might be prepared for that next rung on the ladder.
Way to Go Hawks!!
