CLJV Hawk’s One-Two Punch Knocks Out Davenport, 8-6
A Hawks one-two punch gave CL’s Junior Varsity against Davenport at the Hawk Nest on Thursday night, 8-6.
This game started with the Visitors on offense and The Lake’s defense would leave Davy with a one for two success rate on their 4th down tries. This drive amassed just 15 yards for the Wolves and a turnover on downs.
That is when CL’s second punch produced what would be the winning drive and knock-out punch with a 9 play drive for 53 yards that had Jacob Price accounting for 38 of those steps with a 2 yarder touchdown with 2:40 left on that first quarter clock. Price would also convert his 2 pt conversion via a run for what would be all the Hawks would need for this win.
The Hawks gave up just 62 first half yards and forced two turnovers when Linebacker Caleb Armstrong had an interception stopping a Davenport next drive and then a fumble recovery for Ayden Manzo putting a hiatus on this following Davy drive before halftime.
It wasn’t until Davenport’s 5th drive in the 4th quarter when the Wolves marched down the field going 56 yards and a score from 3 yards out. It was the try on a 2 pointer to tie the score when ,The Hawk Defense, stopped the Wolves’ QB just short and CL still with that 2 point advantage, 8-6.
Davy was not finished tho, as their defense forced a punt that traveled 16 yards that set up one more try for these Visitors for a chance to finish their comeback try.
With the help of 2 personal foul penalties that would set up DHS with a first down on CL’s 12 yard line had this game full of, end of game, excitement.
That was when the Hawk defense/special teams would take control.
An unsuccessful run for minus 2 yards was a key play that changed Davenport’s mindset as they had two more running plays for 3 yards and setting up 28 yard try for a field goal.
Joseph Matos took any hope for a Wolves’ field goal when broke into the backfield so fast that the ball was quickly going in the other direction that secured a Hawk win.
CLJV used packed backfield of Price (77 yards), Chris Brown (66 yards) and Gavyn Baldera (63 yards) which had Davenport picking their poison on who might be the ball carrier. That strategy worked occasionally (hence guessing right every time Lucas Schexnayder had a chance to carry the rock) but winning the time of possession was an integral part securing this victory.
Now Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity will take on Burnet next week as this win gave this team a, 1-0-1 record and a chance for another Hawk JV District Championship.
Way to Go Hawks!!
