Boys Basketball: Hawks Raised the Water in 92-25 Win Over KIPP

Ryan Alvarez is successful on one of his 12 made baskets in Hawks win over KIPP!

Canyon Lake finished off a KIPP team who were short on some key players but on this night that might not have mattered after a 67 point win to start the season, 92-25.

                   Let’s Go Hawks!!

The Lake’s Boy Basketball Team had reached the 90 point plateau twice since play begin in 2008 with both of those accomplishments came against the same school when CL beat KIPP, 92-18 during the 2021-22 season.

CLHS had 3 players with double digit scoring with Ryan Alvarez leading the pack scoring 26 points and Jean Paul Alexander (10 pts) and Dalton Stromquist (12 pts).

Mario Aguilar who led CL in scoring last year was a jack of all trades on this night as he had a double-double by dishing out 13 assists and securing 10 rebounds. Six of those boards came on the offensive glass.

Those 13 assists by Aguilar was 2 more than the previous record of 11 by Tyler Pauly in a Llano game back during the 2020 season.

                            Go Hawks!!

Alvarez helped out with his scoring conversions as all but one of his makes came from an assist by one of his teammates.

Every Hawk (but Alvarez) finished this night with an assist which included Harris Gilliam notching 6 assists and as a team The Lake had 33 total assists which is an all time record.

All of the players were in the scoring column as Canyon Lake will continue to wait for two starters from last year’s team, Carter Williams & Jaxson Jeter wait to be cleared for action during the season.

Shooting 62% from the floor and 58% from beyond the arc were also a bonus as this year’s team continues to bond when tougher competition comes calling in the coming weeks.

Asked Head Coach Monte Cole if CL accomplished their goal in games that turn out to non-competitive, “I think so…part of it was having new guys that have come in…I put guys in different roles that maybe they were not used to doing…to give them more opportunities to work on things both offensively and defensively and for the most part I think they did alright. We just got to focus on improving everyday and every possession, whether it is a game, practices, or scrimmages whatever it is we have to keep improving every day.”

Asked bout the ease in which the game progressed through the spacing and overall game Coach Cole continued, “Yeah that is a big thing we have worked on and tried to improve on is spacing and guys playing without the ball…knowing where to go so when the ball handler gets stopped and they are where they need to be and ready to make a play…and the ball handler knows where they’re going to be…that just builds a lot of trust in those guys and they developed a lot of confidence since the Spring.”

Canyon Lake will hit the hardwood again this coming Tuesday when Hondo comes to The Lake for a 7:30pm tip-off.

Come out and see this year’s Hawk Hoopsters!!

Go Hawks!!
