For that new sport in town, CL’s Boys Water Polo team swam to new heights after improving to an Area Round contest against Westlake this year in hopes for deeper runs in the future.

Go Hawk’s We Fix Your Water Leaks!

This sport has a plethora of 6A & 5A Schools and these past two campaigns there were just two 4A teams with Canyon Lake and Davenport making up this small fraternity.

Davenport is a school that is sure to graduate up to a 5A status when the new alignment is announced during February.

The Lake, will keep their residency in 4A giving this Hawk sport with the only horse in town.

The ReSporter caught up with Head Coach Page Small for a recap to this past season.

Coach Page Small commented on the size of CLHS and how what he does to prepare the David’s (Hawks) to compete against the Goliaths (5A & 6A schools), “By continuing to stress proper fundamentals, situational awareness, and execution.”

That was well said while Coach was picking up a small rock for his sling.

                    Way to Go Hawks!!

“I am fortunate that I have had the opportunity to coach great kids,” Coach Small said when asked for his overall thoughts these past two years. “These Canyon Lake player’s are loving the game of water polo and continue to improve.”

That improvement was evident after finishing 3rd in district and winning their Bi-District game against Johnson (Buda) last month.

On what Coach Small is looking for when practice starts next August, “It will be easier for me, since a majority of the players know many of the basic drills and fundamentals. This makes it easier for the new players to assimilate and learn by observing their peers who now know what to do and what the expectation are.”

Coach Small was asked if he was surprised with how this year turned out, “In some ways it did, I knew we would be better but I wasn’t sure whether I would have the commitment to improve from the players like I had. We evolved from counterattack only offense, into being able to set up and run plays.”

Coach Small came to Texas after being in the pool in California which has been a breeding state in this sport for many years.

How far is Texas from California since Water Polo has been a high school sport on the West Coast for the past 56 years? “Overall very far… and a team like Westlake would be competitive in California’s Section Quarter Finals.”
