Cross Country Trio Hopeful for Great Outcome for State
The Lake has upped their number of entries from 2 (Cadence Patterson & Alek Villavicencio) two years ago with Patterson making her 3rd State Meet and will she will be followed with 2 newbies in this realm with Sophomore Tristan Schenk and Freshman Eva Zabarcenco.
Schenk qualified for the State Meet with a 12th place finish during last week’s Regional Meet in Kingsville. To say that he left nothing in his tank after qualifying would be a huge truism as this young man ran on pure adrenalin after being attended to after the race with an ice bath to get his mojo back.
“Yeah, after I crossed over the finish line I was so overheated I just passed out,” Schenk recalled when talking bout his Regional Run. “The last 400 meters was a little blurry in my mind….I remembered passing one kid maybe on the 200 meter straight and I remember being neck to neck with this one guy on the 100 meter straight and I genuinely thought that he beat me but apparently I kicked it in enough to beat him.”
Passing those two last runners is what secured a spot for another chance to improve in Round Rock.
Schenk finished in the top ten for CL in the 1600 Meter Run last year with a 4:59.38 that is presently the 9th best time for that event and has the 5th best time in the 3200 meter run finishing with a 10:52.53 time last
Patterson’s best finish at the State Meet was two years ago when she finished 17th running a 11:52.80 and then last season was working through some issues which had her finish at 60th marking a 12:50.60 time.
What will make this year’s meet interesting was having Patterson coming through with a 2nd place finish in Kingsville which shows a big improvement from her previous season.
Patterson has been in the shadow of a very accomplished runner from Fredericksburg (Taylor Grona) who finished 1st in last week’s Regional Meet beating Patterson by a bit more than a second.
What’s important bout that finish is realizing what this Billies’ Grona has done in her past 3 State Meets.
Taylor Grona Place Time Was beat by Freshman Year: 4th 11:47.05 16.0 seconds Sophomore Year: 2nd 11:17.30 1.0 second Junior Year: 2nd 11:38.30 0.2 of a second
Point being with a close loss in that Region Meet will put Patterson in position to have a chance to be in the ‘running’ for a very high finish.
Canyon Lake’s Eva Zarbarcenco who qualified as a Freshman will also be making her appearance as The Lake continues to go to new heights in a sport that had never amounted to much in ways of awards. She is the first Freshman to rise to this accomplishment after Patterson’s first State Meet was as a Sophomore.
Anticipation this Friday as Canyon Lake puts 3 Athletes on their spot light for a bright finish and as always….Go Finish Hawks!!
The ReSporter’s Instagram Account has interviews with Tristan & Cadence and due to not being able to get with Eva, The ReSporter talked with sister Mia for thoughts on this State Meet.
