Hawk’s Baseball Roll Dice in Fredericksburg Win, 4-3.
Head Coach Victor Escamilla was a river boat gambler in Hawk’s, 4-3 win over Fredericksburg to start district play.
This game had, The Lake in control from the outset till that 7th inning came calling.
This inning has been instrumental for this young Hawk team that had found it hard to finish an opponent with a win.
Those early season upheaval’s had Coach Escamilla throwing the dice in hopes that this hurdle could finally become a reward.
Starting pitcher, Luke Roskin had pitched a gem up until the 7th as he had averaged less than 10 pitches per frame but this bug-a-boo inning had come calling again and the Billies started this frame with just their 2nd walk in this contest.
Roskin struck out his next batter before surrendering a couple of infield hits and some single rockets to the outfield.
That ended up with 3 Billie runs and CL with one strikeout. Fredericksburg had 1st and 2nd base occupied with runners before another strikeout but FHS still had a chance to put this game into extra innings or a chance to end this battle with a hit.
That’s when the ‘River Boat Gambler’ motif was presented as Coach Escamilla decided to walk their next batter that loaded the bases which increases the odds of scoring a tying run via a hit-walk-hit batter-wild pitch-passed ball-etc.
You get the idea that this would be a risky gamble.
Escamilla was quick with a response, “We didn’t walk…’somebody’, we walked Drake Threadgill. I have seen him play for four years and I have seen what he does and he can put the ball over the fence in a hurry and he got a good piece (of the ball) last time up and the guy behind him struggled so we went after that guy and we just rolled the dice there.”
That next guy up would end up striking out for the third time in this battle which would end the game on three pitches.
Roskin started this game striking out the side and ended (with a few more other happenings) striking out the side to end this contest.
Canyon Lake started this game with a ground out but then Gram Simpson had his team leading 11th walk that helped set the table for two consecutive doubles off the bats of Carter Williams and Tanner House that was followed with a Brent Torres single that had The Lake scoring 3 first inning runs.
In that 2nd frame it was Roskin that homered on a line-drive over the left field fence that their outfielder took two steps before becoming a spectator as he watched the ball clear the fence for what would be the winning run in this thriller.
It was a river boat gambler of a game that the roll of the dice paid off to start this district season with a win.
Now Canyon Lake will prepare for the Comal Clash with an early start against a tough Medina Valley team with that first pitch at 9:30am on Thursday.
Good time to come out for some baseball. Let’s Go Hawks!!
