Football: Hawks & Bulldogs Ended in a Dead Heat
The ReSporter will equate this football season with reading a book and in our last article we had the title as a New Book & First Chapter entering Canyon Lake’s first scrimmage against the Burnet Bulldogs.
After reading that first chapter in the Burnet Scrimmage, The ReSporter, was intrigued with a battle that showed promise on both sides of the ball.
CLake’s defense continued their climb with another strong showing with the first unit not allowing a score. These Bulldogs did have one explosive pass play but was left empty handed after a missed field goal.
An early whistle negated a Carter Williams interception and score but this chapter still proved to set a nice plot as you continue to read what might come with each new week.
Offensively The Lake’s offense still showed encouraging signs but did still has a lot of work to do. Burnet’s defense was a strong point for their last year’s team and that was certainly the case for this opening act.
“Burnet was a good football team and we went toe toe with a heck of a good football team,” Head Coach Sam Parker started. “Our defense played outstanding but a lot of mistakes on offense….we should have put the ball in the end zone at the end after a fumble took that chance away.”
“We have a lot of things to correct and that is why we do this and we have another week of getting better and then two more weeks before we actually get to start, Coach surmised.”
When asked what Coach Parker is expecting to see next week, “Just each step….this week was a little bit more of busted assignments and a few of those things and next week we want to see that we get a little cleaner and obviously they need to understand what they are doing and can do it and play fast.”
Going back to year 2008 when CLHS had just been outclassed with a team with no seniors and followed their, 1-9 record with an astonishing, 6-5 year where the tables were turned with wins over Liberty Hill (14-7), Blanco (21-14) and Fredericksburg (14-7). These 3 contests the year before had CL’s defense gave up a total of 184 points that equates to a 61 point average. Those above scores for that 2009 year had The Lake’s Defense surrender 28 points and 9 points per contest to those same 3 teams.
These pre-season battles have seen a stout defense thus far which was that main ingredient in turnaround 2nd 2009 season.
A new book that showed some good plot adventures and leaving The ReSporter ready to see how the next chapter unfolds as the regular season starts to come about.
The ReSporter doesn’t know bout you but it looks like it is time to go purchase a bookmark.
