Hawk Freshman Bomb Veterans Memorial, 30-22
Canyon Lake’s Freshman set the tone of their win over Veterans Memorial early and had.a 22-0 lead before The Visitors could put points on their board with 1 second on that first half clock.
QB Damon Garcia’s offensive line was able to control the line of scrimmage allowing enough time for dropping some dimes to Kobe Halverson (7 catches 81 yds), Archer Miller (4 catches 136 yards) and an 84 yard bomb to Dario Fax that covered 84 yards.
The game started with these Hawks marching down the field to Veterans 18 yard line but a penalty left too much yardage to cover to keep that drive going.
On the Patriots first drive, Defensive Lineman Will Crisp recoved a fumble at the Hawk’s 38 yard line and then Garcia teamed up with Archer for a 36 yarder and two plays later Brayden Sullivan bull-dozed 3 yards for CL’s first score. The Lake was good on a Garcia to Halverson pass for an 8 point lead.
Then a defensive stop gave CL the ball 72 yards from paydirt and it took 9 plays to give The Lake a, 14-0 lead.
This drive had Garcia throwing 4 for 4 with an explosive 35 yard catch by Miller setting up that second score from 8 yards out and Miller being that recipient.
Another defensive shut-down as these Patriots went backwards on this set of plays (-3 yds) and a 52 yard punt by Veterans.
It took just two plays to score when Garcia found a wide open Faz and a race to the goal line covering 84 yards and a healthy 22 point advantage.
Hawk defense continued their dominance with a Halverson interception but one play later had CL gifting the visitors with a fumble, which led to a score, leaving one second on the first half clock. That fumble had VM needing only 19 yards for their first score.
Veterans’ started the 2nd half with the ball needing 50 yards to tighten the score but another opportunistic Hawk Defense caused some negative plays coupled with a penalty stopping this drive.
Canyon Lake would respond with another bomb this time for 56 yards to Archer and the Hawks on the enemies 24 yard line. A 4th down pass conversion for 9 yards with Halverson leaving this CL Freshman team with a, 30-7 advantage.
The Patriots would put up a valiant comeback but were left seeing The Lake forming a victory formation milking the final minute for a well deserved win.
The last time any Hawk team topped 300 yards passing was during their second year in 2009 by QB Ross Wagliardo.
Doing some Jethro Bodine math would have Mr. Wagliardo around 32 or 33 years old.
And he would respond with a Way to Go Hawks salute.
