Softball: Lake Triples their Pleasure in Win over Luling, 5-2
The Lake’s Softball tripled their pleasure with a come from behind win beating Luling, 5-3 at the Hawk Nest.
Coach Hope Gipson talked bout this win and what the team did to accomplish this feat, “We talked about being competitive and being selfless and knowing that my role might vary at every at bat….my role might vary every day and what am I doing to make sure that we are extending an inning…that we are able to our job whether it is to bunt get a steal or just put the ball in play,” Head Coach Gipson said in response to how the team turned around that 6th inning with solid at bats for a comeback victory. “We’ve got to get better of taking ownership of our job.”
Gipson continued, “During the Wurst Tournament I talked the first day bout let’s go to war and in the top of that 6th inning we talked about that…to go to war for each other and know that everything you do is for your teammates.”
Canyon Lake did not respond until later but a 5-2 Luling team entering this battle had other thoughts and The Lake gifted a run to start that first inning when a stolen base became a run as CL’s defense played hot potato with the ball resulting in that one run deficit.
Canyon Lake’s first inning had possibilities with a one out walk for Marley Christian that was followed by a stolen base but a kryptonite moment started with those last two Hawks walking back to the dugout with a strikeout ending that frame.
Those K’s would balloon to 7 straight Hawks with a strikeout before Liza Schexnayder finally getting a seeing eye double down the left-field line in the 3rd inning.
That double was the first Hawk hit but the result was another stranded player left on base.
Meanwhile Gonzales was keeping the hope alive with the game still being one Hawk run away from tying the score.
Then a top of the 5th inning theatrics when Gonzales gave up her only walk of the game that would turn into the second Eagle run coming from more gifted errors via the same as that first run was awarded.
Two strike-outs and a fielding error would find home plate with the next Luling player doubled for that 3rd run of this game.
The Lake now seemed to be on life support as they had produced just two hits and were down by what seemed like a hill becoming a mountain to climb with just 3 innings remaining.
Life was evident in the bottom of that stanza when Aubrey Long rapped a double that was followed by a infield single off the bat for Kylee Goff.
That opportunity was slammed down fast on a short pop-up that resulted in a double play by the next Lake batter.
That hill became like Mtn. Everest now having just two innings to stage a chance for that first win.
Luling started their 6th inning with a single but that was when Gonzales retired her next three batters with two being rung up via strikeouts and a fly-out.
The Hawk top of the batting order would be next and Liza Schexnayder’s pop-up to the pitcher was dropped and life was present with speed on the bases after a sacrifice by Marley Christian.
Then a, never been done before moment, for those Hawk history books with back-to-back triples by Fields and Gonzales that scored two runs with one out.
Another strikeout put the onus for Kailey Morgan who worked a walk that kept the inning going for Long who hit a ‘long’ one for a triple that ended the scoring in this comeback inning.
Three hits for triples and 5 of those 7 hits in this contest going for extra bases which was a difference maker.
Gonzales ended the game throwing 7 pitches with 6 going for strikes and a Lake win. Those extra base hits resulted in Canyon Lake with a balmy .652 slugging percentage….and the rest of history.
A good wake up game for the team’s first win and that will hopefully continue in a Blanco Tournament this week-end.
Way to GO LAKE!!
