What If Canyon Lake would not have had any Bug-a-boos? That was said by many Hawk fans (maybe not a lot but at least one or two) after a, 42-14 loss to Calallen in an Area Round battle.

Turnovers was the bug-a-boo that led to this set-back with 4 that would turn this game in favor and  giving these Cats extra lives leading to a win for Calallen.

Canyon Lake started slow when the Cats only needed a 32 yard drive, for their first score, after a good kick-off runback.

Then those bug-a-boos started to appear with one on a 3rd down pass play that CL’s defense swarmed all over…yet to have a face-mask penalty that now had these Cal-Cats with a 1st down on CL’s 12 yard line. Instead of a 4th down needing 9 yards for a first. Four plays later the Lake was down, 7-0.

CLake’s first drive garnered one first down and then punted on a 4th down and two yards needed. That was followed when Cal-Cats offense with a 3 plays and punt sequence.

The Lake would take their next possession down to Calallen’s 31 yard line when that first turnover, an interception, was returned 71 yards to pay dirt. This Hawk drive had 7 plays and 3 first downs.

The dye had been cast as this first quarter had CL’s offense starting to jell while Defensively the Lake would end up allowing just 238 total yards for this game.

CL’s Offense ended up with 419 balanced yards as that first drive would be the only punt in this contest. CLHS ended with 223 rushing and 196 yards through the air.

After another interception Calallen did have an impressive drive going 16 plays with 12 of those snaps 5 yards or less. But an eventual time eating scoring drive that went 57 yards and a, 21-0 lead leaving 2:14 left before halftime.

A score would get CL back into the game by receiving the 2nd half kick-off and with a score a hawk/cat fight would ensue.

Well that first part played out when CL used 10 plays with a tush-push score for Chris Brown and a little Hawk momentum being down, 21-7.

That drive was highlighted by two consecutive pass plays. The first had QB Jace Wheeler finding Lucas Schexnayder for a 20 yard 3rd down conversion on Calallen’s 29 yard line. Schexnayder led CL with 75 receiving yards with several eye-opening catch and runs.

Wheeler then put the ball in the basket down the far sideline to Peyton King for 26 yards to the 3 yard line setting up those 3 consecutive tush-push plays.

Now a second half opening drive was going as planned with two more Schexnayder catches covering 34 yards and a 16 yard and a scamper for Gram Simpson that had CL needing 25 yards to put this contest in overdrive.

But that bug-a-boo interception presented itself, this time, the Cats returned this bug 81 yards and what would be a 14 point snafu swing and a, 28-7 score.

Wait…then the last bug-a-boo happened but this time it was a first play 53 yard run for Brown who was stripped  tackled resulting in a fumble.

Calallen took advantage of these bug-a-boos which accounted to scoring 4 TD’s.

Canyon Lake scored two more times but was only allowed to count one of those scores after a motion penalty nullified an incredible one handed catch for King being called back.

King, earlier scored on a 9 yarder late in that 3rd quarter.

Canyon Lake’s line of scrimmage was on top of their game on both sides of the ball with all the proof needed would be perusing those team stats at the end of this article.

Between the 20 yard lines it would be all Canyon Lake but with all those bug-a-boos it would be a wait till next year mantra as this season certainly had some good ole  fashion football by The Lake and this  Great Senior Class.

Way to Go Lake and next time CL can work on projecting those Bug-a-Boos on their opponents.

The ReSporter will have some Year-End rewards and season stats articles so stay tuned.
