The Lake did not start their game with Austin Travis very well (understatement) after posting a, 15-2 first quarter with those two lonely points courtesy of a Eli Cole put-back that had 1:30 remaining in the opening quarter.

You read that right….Canyon Lake was looking at a 15 point deficit to start this game.

Way to make some Good Hits!

A start this bad would usually bring a family conversation in the crowd of,  ‘Where would be a good place to eat after this game?’

That meal turned out to be a full buffet affair that had this Hawk team not only getting back into this game but….finishing with a 11 point win.

What was the secret sauce? A heavy dose of defense that led to 14 steals and bruises on several Hawk players going after loose balls. Add reducing turnovers down from 11 in that first frame to only two for that next 8 minutes proved to be a winning eatery.

CLHS would score 25 points during that second period and realizing a 3 point lead going into halftime, 27-23.

     Let’s Go Hawks Great Comeback!

Canyon Lake would continue their pressure starting the 2nd Half garnering their largest lead in this segment, 9 points (38-29) when Gavin Cano sank a free throw with 1:27 left before the final quarter, the Hawk lead was still tenuous tho, 40-34.

Starting that last period, two buckets for Fuentes and Torres along with assists for Torres & Rowe during the first 90 seconds gave CL a, 44-34.

The Lake kept their distance for the remainder of this quarter as Austin Travis cut into CL’s lead to 8 points while Canyon Lake was able to up their advantage to 12 points on a Fuentes bucket with 3:55 remaining, 48-36.

Basically…Canyon Lake scored 52 points in 3 quarters and outscoring these Rebels, 52-28 during that span.

Another good,  gut check,  in seeing the possibilities when communication and an all out energy burst that caused chaos on your opponent that led to good offensive play.

                            Go Lake!

Bobby Torres led The Lake with 5 assists while Josh Rowe forced 5 steals while the team reached 15 steals and assists to end this win.

Canyon Lake did finish with a 3-1 tourney record and lost in a Championship against Stephenville.

Head Coach Monte Cole commented on what the team accomplished, “I think this tournament helped us regain some confidence and start moving in the right direction. It was a great tournament for us and in championship game we played really good Stephenville team and were competitive for a majority of the game.

Coach Cole continued, “The younger guys are learning how hard you have to play at the Varsity level to win games and it’s showing. Very proud of this group of guys.”

A good showing which left the Hawk fans never being able to come to a destination for that elusive win…which made that non-decision a good decision.

Hawk Nation is Proud of The LAKE!
