                        Go Canyon Lake!

Canyon Lake had a good bounce back win with their fast start win over the Navarro Panthers, 52-41.

The Lake had lost two starters (Reese Pipkin & Phoenix Fuentes) to injuries in recent games and now stand with a 1-1 record starting with a loss to SA Cole last week.

“One of our emphasis has been getting off to better starts and we really focused on executing at the beginning of the game,” Head Coach Monte Cole stated. “The kids did a great job of having quality possessions on both offense and defense in the 1st quarter. With our injuries comes a shorter bench and guys came off the bench and contributed all game. I thought it was a good game to start in creating momentum to lead into district next week.”

District is starting January 16th at home against Wimberley.

                                      Let’s GO LAKE!

That first quarter would qualify as a fast start rushing out to a 10 point (13-3) lead within the first half of the opening quarter.

In fact it was three three-pointers (two for Cole Dees & one for Wyatt Sims) that cashed in. Dees scored eight points during that first quarter and CLHS finished that first period with 4 makes beyond the arc. That is one more than CLake has averaged per game this season for a, 18-4 advantage.

The Panthers did claw back 3 points in that second quarter but The Lake still had an 11 point lead going into halftime, 27-16.

Canyon Lake continued garnering double digit numbers in assists and steals but finished with 21 turnovers which allowed Navarro to stay close enough for a chance of getting a run to close for a chance to change the outcome.

                      Let’s GO HAWKS!

The Lake did have an answer for those mini Panther runs and ran their biggest lead up to 15 points, 40-25.

CLHS shot 50% from the field for the game and finished with seven three pointers with a balmy 41% which is by far the best this season.

The Stephenville game CL had a 33% on six makes and in a Yorktown win there were 8 makes (the most this season) with a 24% in that contest.

It was the charity stripe where Canyon Lake left 10 points on the floor shooting 33% which was less that beyond the arc. (Thought The ReSporter would never release that type of stat…..ever.)

Dees finished with 21 points as the only Hawk in double figures but it was an 8 assist-5 steal evening for Gavin Cano that helped with an overall good finish.

Cano has taken more responsibility with two guards not in the lineup as well as Sims being pegged as a starter.

Canyon Lake will finish their final regular season slate when they travel to Comfort Friday with the tip-off at 6:30pm.
