Hawks Need Defibrillator in Loss to Badgers, 42-14
Thinking back on better nights as Robert Woods takes down a Smithville Quarterback
CL Hawks get badgered in loss to Lampasas, 42-14.
“We did not show up in the first half and we got whipped,” Head Coach Charley Drum stated. “Our effort wasn’t there we have to learn from it.”
Lampasas’ offense was a well oiled machine against Canyon Lake on this night as they ran all night long without much resistance.
“All of us are to blame as we need to figure it out,” Coach Drum continued. “We just had some success after the Marion game when we faced Wimberley and we did not handle that success very well…..we will need to heal up and get back to work and fix our bad habits.”
Canyon Lake was a no-show on Friday night as there was, nothing to see here, as they were drawing chalk around a Hawk on the sidewalk.
Investigators arrived soon after the discovery and went to work in trying to find the Badgers, that witnesses said, was the perpetrator in this incident.
Try 475 rushing yards on 46 carries and it would not take an Einstein to know that averages out over 10 yards per carry.
There have been six games the Hawks have given up more yardage than what was tattooed on the Hawks wing as the investigators were putting the sheet over this crime victim.
As there have been just 3 games when CL has given up more than the 475 yards rushing this Badger accumulated on this night.
The majority of those games happened back during Canyon Lake’s first year in 2008, so to day this was an innocent bystander would be a gross understatement.
On the one drive Canyon Lake forced a punt, Lampasas just booted the ball 51 yards as a Badger was eager to down that punt on the Hawk’s 2 yard line.
Self inflicted wounds would be what some of the witnesses recounted on the happenings with this hapless Hawk as their first two times with the ball a lost fumble and interception would give these Badgers the ball and a chance to inflict more damage. (which they did)
Mike Thorpe had another good night punting the ball, but this statistic is not good when you need touchdowns instead of punts.
Thorpe would respond with a 48 yard punt to the Lampasas 21 yard line giving some hope that a good defensive stand could reverse the field.
One play and 79 yards later, Canyon Lake was lining up to block an extra point.
The score was now 21-0 and not much hope as the Hawks had 17 offensive plays and 61 yards up to this point in this contest.
Enter the Hawk’s Special Teams as Luke Justis and Matt Adams would try to turn the Hawk’s fortune around.
Adams has had success with returns and now Justis will join the Return Club after taking the kick back for 88 yards and getting some life back into the Hawks lifeless body.
A defensive stop by forcing a fumble added to more hope that these Hawks would rise again for a comeback, but four plays for no yardage would stifle those CL’s hopes.
Lampasas would score in 4 plays and put the finishing touches to the Hawks with a 28-7 lead going into intermission.
Canyon Lake would get the ball to start the next stanza and 16 plays was promising but the drive stalled on the Badger’s 13 yard line and with a running offense a whopping 7 minutes was gone with little hope for making a comeback.
After giving up another score, Lampasas would make this tally in the final quarter and an insurmountable 28 point lead, 35-7.
The never say quit Hawks did respond with their only offensive touchdown for the night when QB Ben Fulton would find Heath McDonough for 28 yards for a first at the Badgers 33 yard line.
Then two plays later, Austin Brennan would catch a 30 yard pass in the end zone for a nifty touchdown cutting the lead to 21 points with a little over 8 minutes remaining.
Lampasas would do what they do best on this night and wipe the crime scene clean so no finger prints could be found as they used more of their 475 yards of rushing into the end zone where they were last seen scoring a final knock out blow, 42-14.
Canyon Lake will now have a week off before District 14-4A gets started at home and Liberty Hill comes to town.
There was life after this loss and now Canyon Lake will need to find out the mistakes and proceed into district play as this year’s record is the same as last year in what proved to be a special season.
The Hawks are young and a bounce back is certainly possible as Canyon Lake will try to rectify the mistake on this fateful night. Time will tell.
