CL Hawks Freshman Hit Home-Run in Win, 41-8
Canyon Lake’s Freshman squad remained undefeated as the batted around the order in a win over the Lanier Viking team, 41-8 while playing on a baseball field.
The Hawks have a decent set of games as they keep piling on the runs and pitching shutouts against their opponents.
Winning Streak:
Dating back to the 8th Grade Mountain Valley games this group of students now have an 11 game winning streak as they prepare for Liberty Hill next Thursday.
This Year's Games: CL Freshman 48 Lago Vista 06 CL Freshman 34 Smithville 00 CL Freshman 16 SA Cole 08 CL Freshman 48 Wimberley 00 CL Freshman 29 Lampasas 08 CL Freshman 41 Austin Lanier 08
Several players had a good game in Austin and Trenton Lorett started things off with an interception on the Vikings first drive with a 30 yard return.
CL then set up shop on Lanier’s 15 yard line and three plays later, Lorett would have the honors scoring the first points.
Then another Lorett highlight film was ordered up when QB Cooper Harris had a perfect pass to a streaking Lorett down the sideline for an 84 yard catch and run for a lead that would never be threatened the rest of the night.
The Vikings had their best offensive play for their next drive with a 36 yard run which pushed their -13 yards of offense to the positive.
A Brent Hemphill sack and JT Greene sack on consecutive plays resulted in a 4th down and 45 yards needed for a first.
Lanier would muff their snap and another 11 yards lost on the punt attempt.
“Usually we will focus on what we are going to do,” Greene said on the green. “Earlier this season we were ready to play Wimberley and now we need to have that same attitude when we play Liberty Hill next….but if we stick and stay with our gaps and then whoever we play will have a hard time getting a first.”
That certainly was the case as Austin Lanier had just one first down during that first half of play.
Canyon Lake had a one play Cooper to Greene pass for 30 yards that would be the result, as this Hawk team just kept on batting around their order and scoring 41 points in a row and resulting in a sunk Viking ship on this night.
“Usually when I hear the play then I set a goal for the end zone,” Lee said after responding to his 25 yard run to paydirt.
Not a bad goal when you can realize that end result.
Defensively Lee also had a chance to take care of business in this game.
“Our linebacker’s are good at containment and that allows the line to get through,” Lee said with confidence. “It is usually easy to read run when you know the secondary is there.”
That first half would end up with CL having 176 total yards vs. Lanier’s 24 steps.
Canyon Lake’s Freshman have a traffic jam with many capable running backs trying to earn some, ‘look at me’, runs as this competiion is a coaches dream.
Just looking at the rushers on this night, you have 6 players with a combined 9 yards per carry as they play this game like a 6-Man football tilt.
Player Attempts Yardage Average Greyson Lee 2 38 19.0 Cade Dunavant 5 62 12.4 Connor Rose 2 24 12.0 Trenton Lorett 5 30 6.0 Tristan Chacon 3 18 6.0 Landry Moore 2 12 6.0
Luckily for Landry Moore who was tackled for a 5 yard loss on his first try had an opportunity with one more rush, resulting in a 17 yard run and positive yardage.
Each rushing play might be your last in games like this as each player, once again, knows that they have precious chances to impress in game situations.
Austin Lanier did have a 75 yard drive to run out the clock which helped double their total yardage output of the evening.
Greyson Lee had a good night from both sides of the line with several tackles for loss and a nifty 25 yard touchdown run.
This game was another run ruled event as Canyon Lake will certainly have their hands full when they face Liberty Hill next week.
Canyon Lake in their 6 games has one punt for 26 yards and that might be a concern as their just has not been a chance for seeing if this part of the game could improve.
On second thought, the coaches might be able to let this part of the game to suffer if the offense continues their dominance.
Plus, it is hard to punt a baseball.
Go Hawks beat Liberty Hill.
