CL Freshman Win Battle over Undefeated Billies, 14-6

A battle of two undefeated teams was played out at Hawk Stadium as Canyon Lake left the field with their no loss season in tack, 14-6.

Canyon Lake figured out real early that this would be a good game as Fredericksburg used the quarterback read play with their QB running the ball from their 28 yard line to the Hawks 41 marker before a forced punt after three average running plays.

Then on the Billies defensive side of the ball, CL was throttled with a 15 yard drive on 6 plays resulting in a punt which is a position not seen much during this year’s games.

That punt by Trenton Lorett did travel 54 yards backing Fredericksburg inside their 20 yard line.

The Billies started their scoring on that drive after going 81 yards on 11 plays, when Running Back Sebera scored from 5 yards out.

A 33 yard pass play helped in getting Fredericksburg in good field position for that score as the Billies needed 23 yards for a first on that play.

Canyon Lake woke up after that score and scurried 55 yards with a heavy dose of Triston Chacon as his shortest run was the 1 yard scoring play.

Three consecutive plays of 9 yards or more with the longest going for 23 yards. All the runs were up the middle as Fredericksburg was holding their ground on those wide running snaps.

“They (Billies) were doing a good job of getting to our sweeps so we needed to do our next best thing and go up the middle,” Head Freshman Coach Greene said. “We had some adversity and our QB (Cooper Harris) got hurt and also having a bye week and not playing in two weeks.”

“They (Fredericksburg) were undefeated and we just beat a good football team,” Coach Greene admonished.

Canyon Lake’s defense coaxed a 3 plays and punt sequence that allowed the Hawks with one more chance to score before the halftime buzzer.

Chacon would respond with a 50 yard burst that helped put the Hawks in position to carry out that plan for scoring.

Chacon had 5 of the 6 plays on this drive that would be the points needed to make the Billies with a best case scenario of trying to get a tied game.

On those two scoring drives, Chacon had 9 carries in a row totaling, 108 of his 167 total yards on the night.

“They (Fredericksburg) were over pursuing and with our bad week so we needed to refocus and remember how bad we wanted this win and we did not want that to slip up,” Chacon recounted. “We just readjusted and got our game back.”

Canyon Lake has added to their winning streak from last season as the Hawks battled some adversity in this game and CL had to plug running back Cade Dunavant into taking snaps mode.

Both teams would have the ball two times in that second half and even tho no scoring occurred a first down would help in the, drip….drip…..drip situation for Fredericksburg as they saw their record go from undefeated to a one loss team.

With, 2:32 left on the game, the Billies would have their last chance for having a chance for a tie.

The defense led by a host of Hawks that would shut down the Billies after figuring out how to stop the quarterback read play that Fredericksburg ran for their first drive and first score.

Those first two drives for Fredericksburg totaled, 127 yards which would be 76% of their yardage for the game.

Eighteen plays for the Billies after those plays would add up to a 2.2 yards per play average that would give Canyon Lake a win.

There were several defensive players that would finish this game with red on their helmets after settling down and controlling the Billie offense.

Defensive Lineman Cameron Hebert along with many Hawks would control the trenches and pressure the Fredericksburg QB into more misses than successes.

Now the Hawks will prepare for another good team when Taylor comes to town next Thursday and Canyon Lake will attempt to finish their home schedule undefeated.
