CLJV Lose Game but Still Win District

Caimen McDonough and Joseph Ruiz ready for next year

Canyon Lake Junior Varsity lost their last game of the season but still claimed the District 14-4A Championship.

“I am proud of these young man,” Head JV Coach John Barthels stated. “This year overall was memorable and this was a great group of boys and I look forward to seeing them in the future.”

Boerne came back in the fourth quarter to steal the game from the Hawks as CLJV could not convert a fourth down play deep in Boerne territory, giving the Greyhounds one more chance to score.

The Dogs took advantage and drove 85 yards with the last play covering 53 yards on a catch and run and a lead that would stand, 27-26.

CLJV finished with 356 yards for this night and more than doubled the time of possession over Boerne but it would become a heart breaking loss to a very good passing club.

Boerne finished with 293 yards through the air while the Greyhounds could not run, as that part of their game was a negative 14 yards.

BHJV longest run covered 5 yards as that was not needed as this school would have a decent night making up those rushing yards by the pass.

CLJV had several players that did shine on this night as these players will be reunited with the other Sophomores that have already made the step to Varsity this year.

Canyon Lake would lose just one game this season and this loss to Boerne still was not enough to drop them from the claim of winning all the district marbles.

Joseph Ruiz was the big man on the field on this night as his 13 yards per carry resulted in 128 yards while Lee Stafford and Anthony Jones each had respectful 75 and 64 yards.

Ruiz would finish with several long runs which 2 runs saw the score board light up in counting up points.

“I just saw my blocks and run with them,” Ruiz calculated as if he was running with the interviewer.

On being the District Champion, Ruiz commented, “It feels good because we were a good team and I have never in my life won a championship and it just feels great and I like the feeling.”

Caimen McDonough had two catches for 63 yards and then an interception that was returned for 23 yards.

Those three catches helped in giving CLJV some momentum as one catch had the ball knocked into the air with McDonough having the knowhow to stick with the ball and pull it down for the acrobatic catch.

McDonough’s interception helped stop a Greyhound drive before the end of the first half and keeping a 20-14 lead.

“I watched their tackle and saw he was going to pass block on that play,” McDonough said like he was solving a crime scene. “Then I looked at the QB and he was looking at their #2 (receiver) and I just jumped the route to get the ball.”

On the pass that was hit in the air, McDonough said, “I tried to catch the ball but is was high and when it was hit by one of their players, then I just jumped up to get it.”

The Hawks also had the ball to start the second half and after scoring they would leave just 1:30 on the clock.

CLJV drove for 58 yards on 14 plays with Lee Stafford being the flavor of this drive with taking half of those plays with a handoff while covering 32 of the 58 yards on this TD drive.

In that last quarter, CLJV did have right at 4 minutes to score and take the lead back but this drive was stopped on the Greyhounds 19 yard line.

The game was not in the cards but this year’s district was more than one game and because the Hawks JV took care of business in those other games gives you the idea that this was a break out year as these players will be seen next season coming out of the Hawk Tunnel ready to take their game to the next level.

Now the JV team will continue to work out as they will help the Varsity prepare for their playoff games.

“We are going to play and push the varsity to their limits,” Ruiz closed as it seems he still might have some more runs in store to help Canyon Lake for future games.

Congratulations on a great year: Canyon Lake Junior Varsity District 14-4A-I Champions!!!!
