CL Lady Hawks Beat Somerset for First Win, 41-28

The Lady Hawks were able to get their first win of the season against Somerset on Monday with a 41-28 victory last Monday.

“Well today was a good combination of solid defense and good transition ball,” Head Basketball Coach Mary Beth Gallagher said. “We did a good job of controlling the boards and our height finally came in handy.”

CL finished with 37 rebounds with 13 on the offensive side of the court. Those offensive boards help in making that low shooting percentage will help in getting that turkey to go down better this Thanksgiving.

“We are starting to get back to our gritty defense,” Coach Gallagher admonished. “We do show signs of improvement on our basketball IQ.”

Canyon Lake had a small lead going into halftime (17-11) as the Hawks outscored the Bulldogs 11 points in that pivotable 3rd Quarter for a 17 point lead going into that final stanza.

On where this team was at the start of this season compared to now, Coach Gallagher surmised, “We are not where I want to be as far as turnovers go but we are better than this time last year and we play better as a team and scoring is divided up with everyone contributing.”

Emma Gray finished this game as the high point scorer garnishing 10 points.

All but one player was able to get in the score book as Sarah Russell finished right below Gray with 9 points and then Caitlin Mabry and Sarah Schneider not far behind with 7 points a piece.

“We will need to continue to play solid defense and we need to get stronger offensively by continuing to learn to play together and trust our offenses,” Coach Gallagher closed. “We will continue to work on shooting and scoring in transition.”

Canyon Lake has been away from home for the start of this season as they finished this trek with a 1-3 record as CL returns home for their first home game with Bandera next Tuesday.

Bandera was beat by Somerset earlier this season and with the same mascot name and playing at home should help get this Hawk team in that right frame of mind for another victory.
