CLJV Wins 71-53, While Varsity is Short in Loss to Navarro
HAWKS JV HAVE PANTHERS SEEING RAINBOWS
The CL Junior Varsity team won their second district game with a win over Navarro, 73-53.
CLJV is now averaging 70 points per game in district play as this game had 3 players leading the charge.
Bennie Brownlee led the scoring with a cool 22 points followed closely by Joseph Boyd (19) and Ryner Martin scoring 17.
“I still come out the same and try to be a leader,” Brownlee started when asked about the transition from Varsity to JV. “This is where it counts and we are in the part of the season when we have more games because we are playing in district.”
Most games scheduled for JV and Freshman will be spaced out during the start of the season with no real schedule of games being played regularly.
“I got more open looks and I just started feeling it,” Brownlee continued. “We were in full attack mode.”
Half of the points (36) came from beyond the arc as there was a rainbow showing after this game.
That rainbow was helped when Brownlee shot his trademark high arching shot that hardly moves the net as it is going through the hoop.
The JV Hawks got their lead up to 27 points before a concerted effort of pulling back offensively to let this game end while the Panthers were drying off from all the rain.
Good news for next year’s varsity squad as many of these players will make their mark with some quality shooting skills as they hone in on their skill set to end this season.
“Getting a lot of playing time will help us to be successful and it helped as they pressed a little but we were able to break the press and everybody contributed,” Brownlee chimed like a coach.
If this JV team can continue this style of play, then this will give confidence to a club that struggled to start this season when being pressed.
Navarro was at a loss in trying to stop the 3 amigos on this night as 56 points were amassed from this trio.
With some accented points for good measure.
Come watch the JV this Friday as Canyon Lake takes on Cuero.

HAWKS VARSITY COME UP SHORT IN COMEBACK
Canyon Lake needed to play one more quarter to beat Navarro after a hard fought loss, 65-55.
The Hawks came out with vengeance scoring 11 points in less than 3 minutes and leading 11-1 to start the game.
Navarro responded to close the gap to 5 points in the first quarter and this game would be back and forth until the 4th quarter commenced.
To open this game, Will Gray found himself at the right place for his first 3 shots coming from beyond the line and with a 2 point drive from Rory Preiss, Canyon Lake, had an 11-1 lead.
The Hawks had a lethal outside shot on this night as Jacob Ramirez and Gray combined by making 6 out of 9 which also might be the place the Hawks should shoot their free throws as that stripe was just successful 40% of the time.
Canyon Lake has had problems all year scoring in the 2nd and 4th quarters and this night was no different as a combined 18 points was right at what the Hawks scored in the 1st and 3rd periods.
CL was staring at an eight point deficit with just under 3 minutes in the game when Preiss and Ramirez scored bringing the Hawks to a one possession game.
“I’m proud of the way we attacked when they go on a 7-0 run and we battle back with some good looks,” Coach Lucas Chapman said. “We got to make plays in order to win and now we will make this a learning curve.”
The climb to the mountain top fell short as free throws would thwart a comeback and seal the loss for the visiting Hawk team.
That learning curve will be tested the rest of district play as CL has a chance of still making a mark this season.
Navarro has a 15 game winning streak but a good Hawk effort will give hope as the district continues when Cuero comes to town this Friday.
