Sarah Russell’s Key 3 Pointer Helps in CL’s Win over Cuero

Canyon Lake Girls won a pivotal game with Cuero on Friday helping give the Hawks a chance in making some noise as their district season continues.

The win has CL tied for 4th with Gonzales and that close loss to Navarro certainly planted a seed of confidence.

Emma Gray finished this night scoring 20 points as the Hawks also got some solid performances from many other players.

Sarah Russell had 2 three pointers and finished with 8 points followed by 6 points from Mia Riali and Skylar Hurst.

“We wanted to come out and keep executing our offense,” Junior Russell said.

Russell’s 3 pointer in the fourth quarter stopped a Gobbler run and iced the game for the Hawks.

“I just saw it and I knew I was going to shoot,” Russell said in response to that shot. “We have played two good games in a row and now we need to take it to Wimberley.”

It was a consistent win as Canyon Lake won every quarter which ended with the 14 point victory.

Caitlin Mabry led a posse off the bench with her solid play in win

Shooting 47% from the floor was huge and helped in extending the lead along with playing solid defense.

Canyon Lake can throw some height into games as Sarah Schneider and Gray have a chance for some breathers as Hurst and Caitlin Mabry added a great relief coming off the bench.

“We wanted to play like we did Tuesday with more intensity,” Mabry said succinctly. “We came in with the mindset to play hard and finish.”

Now Canyon Lake will go into next week with another tough game against Wimberley on the road and then welcoming La Vernia this coming Friday.

This week’s game will end the first round of district games and now we can see if CL can finish well with these next two games.

Both games are close and a short drive to Wimberley should be on your schedule as Canyon Lake looks for a chance of shocking District 26-4A.
