Boy’s & Girl’s Basketball Have Rough Week
Canyon Lake had a tough week on the hard wood as both Girl’s and Boy’s teams came up short in losses to Wimberley and La Vernia.
The culprits? It the ReSporter said Free Throws and Turnovers then you would have an idea of led up to those defeats.
In their game with La Vernia on Friday, the Varsity Girls played a the Bears close throughout the contest but after losing the lead right before halftime, the Hawks never could capture the lead back.
With 25 turnovers and shooting 38% from the line the dye had been cast by the end of the game.
Emma Gray continued to excel with another double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Alexa Ramos had a great stint in that first half with some acrobatic shots helping in keeping the game close.
Another good game on defense with 13 for CL in steals as Ramos keeps climbing the Hawk All-Time leader board in just her second year of play, with 113 as she holds down 4th place.
Ramos needs 14 more steals to pass Amber West who graduated in 2011 with 127 for her hard work.
For seasonal points Gray is presently at 9th place passing last year’s Kyndall Drum on the Hawk list with 163 points this season.
On the Hawk Boy’s side, Canyon Lake is certainly in the hunt as they have one more game in the first round of district games playing Yoakum at home next Friday.
A win over the Bulldogs would even their record at 3-3 and give Canyon Lake at a legit chance of making their first playoff chance in the basketball annals.
Canyon Lake Boys just cannot find the right combination for making a run during the second half as that 3rd quarter has been a time where the Hawks lose their mojo.
In last week’s two losses CL’s opponents had a combined 37 points to the Hawk’s 15. Those 22 points help supply the separation needed for Wimberley and La Vernia.
In the game with La Vernia, the Bears had a 5 point lead starting the third quarter and a goose egg in scoring just 3 points allowed LV to increase that lead from 5 to 18 points.
Canyon Lake could not buy a basket as they ended this affair with a 25% shooting from the floor.
La Vernia did have some height and Canyon Lake showed they were not afraid of that presence in the paint, but after having their shot blocked over 10 times helped seal the deal for the visitors.
CL continues to show potential as the Hawks need to up their game with the upper echelon teams for four quarters.
Good news? Only 13 turnovers in the loss, but that shooting percentage from the floor, beyond the arc, and from the charity stripe continues to plague the Hawks as they just can’t fly over the rim and drop the ball through the net.
Bigger claws might help the Hawks as they finish up their first round and prepare for a better result in the second round.
Last year Canyon Lake split with Yoakum and will need a sweep this year to realize their goal which should also stand for field goals.
Go Hawks!!
