Canyon Lake could not capitalize in their loss to Columbus, 15-6, during the Comal County Baseball Tournament.

The Hawks made a valiant comeback when they scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 2nd to draw within 2 runs of the visitors.

That inning had 4 timely hits and enough chaos to put Canyon Lake into a position to make a game on this night.

CL just could not get a 1-2-3 inning as Columbus continued to put pressure on the Hawk defense as Hawk errors made the innings too long for the tired arms for Canyon Lake to withstand the onslaught.

Canyon Lake is also short on arms as JC Parrish (the catcher) got the nod as the starting pitcher on this night.

“I have had trouble with my pitching,” Parrish said. “But I feeling better with good plate appearances and I think we can come together and go far this year when we get into district.”

There was several positives for Canyon Lake and that 6 run inning with Canyon Lake also threatening in each of the other innings that a couple of hits here or there would have put this game in a different sphere.

Ten players coming to bat in that inning had Lee Stafford starting the damage with a single off the ankle of the Columbus pitcher, after the first Hawk struck out.

Colton McDonald followed with a solid single to left field and CL had another strike out having two players on with 2 outs.

McDonald pitched in the win the night before and on this night his bat was on as he finished with a 2 for 2 night in scoring a run.

“We need to stop looking at our games as independent but as a team,” McDonald surmised. “It will take more will than skill and this whole season needs to become a team effort.”

Hayden Reed’s was next up and his speed helped cause an error in reaching first safely, then a walk to Austin Brooks.

Hot hitting Gavin Dietrich had the next hit driving in 2 more runs, as Dietrich had a triple in the Hawks win that drove in a run in that win the night before.

Junior Rory Preiss doubled as his rocket hit made the fence in the left field alley driving in another 2 runs and resulting in 5 runs scored.

Preiss would score on the 3rd error of the inning on Columbus and after the dust settled the Hawks made a game of what seemed like a lost cause.

Canyon Lake left 4 batters in scoring position in the loss with an ending double play with the bases loaded being that final nail in the proverbial coffin for the loss.

The Hawks will continue their last day with two games on Saturday as they will try to survive another hard day in the early part of the season.
