Hawks Lose Back-Bone Trophy & Game to Wimberley, 31-21

Canyon Lake came up short in their loss to Wimberley as the Texans’ Defense shut down the Hawk’s Slot-T in this victory, 31-21.
“We just had too many mistakes and we practiced Wimberley’s running that screen all week,” Head Coach Charley Drum stated. “The last two weeks we stepped up our competition and they made more big plays than we did.”
On what this short week will mean for the team, “We are going to find out but this is why we scheduled this way.”

carry as Wimberley controlled the line of scrimmage and held CL to a total of 68 rushing yards which was their lowest total since CL implemented this offense over 3 years ago.
Liberty Hill held the Hawks rushing offense to 76 total yards last year as that game had Canyon Lake on the short end of the stick.
On the flip side, the Hawks had their best passing game since the induction of the slot-T with 155 yards on 6 completions and that number would have been more without a costly penalty bringing back an 80 yard pass play just before halftime.
That penalized play would have had the Hawks with a much more manageable 3 point deficit coming from their half-time break instead of a 10 point spread.

Canyon Lake amassed 88 total yards during the first half which was helped by 2 Wimberley turnovers that kept the Texans off the board and a kick-off return by Trenton Lorett and their 50 yard pass play to Tanner Faris on the first drive of the game. Making this anyones game.
Wimberley started the game with a 44 yard pass play to Colby Crowder as it took the Texans just 4 plays to cover 57 yards and a quick lead.
CL responded by scoring on a 4th and 6 play from the 50 yard line to a wide open Tanner Faris that tied the score, 7-7.
Austin Brooks played a great game defensively as he recovered a fumble while also making several Texan’s pass plays for little or no yardage in that first quarter.
“We just gave the ball back to quickly and we were shooting ourselves in the feet…..needed to get first downs,” Brooks said astutely. “We (the Seniors) will need to keep the team focused in practice and not get overwhelmed.”
Brooks was talking on how quickly the next game will here next Thursday as the Hawks prepare for the Lampasas game.

Field position would be Wimberley’s friend throughout the first half as the Texans seemed to be knocking on the Hawks goal line most of the half.
With two Texan turnovers deep in Hawk territory, Canyon Lake was able to keep the game within striking distance. Wimberley’s fumble happened on the Hawk 10 yard line and the interception by Heath McDonough was on the series preceding the fumble at the 15 yard marker.
Going into the second quarter, the Hawks had the ball 3 times and not counting the 50 yard pass play was sucking on some bad air totaling 5 yards on 9 plays. Those numbers would not get much better as the second quarter would be just as bad. All total during the first half, CL had 14 carries for 11 yards on the ground.
Those are not good numbers for a team that makes their living running with the rock.

Those 42 yards on that last play would also have a hook and lateral for Heath McDonough to Faris for more excitement and giving the Hawks a chance for scoring.
“We will build off of this,” Heath McDonough surmised. “We can’t play like this and we will just have to step it up next week.”
With a good passing game that would have easily passed the 200 yard mark without that penalty before half will give future teams more to prepare for.
Austin Brooks recovers a Fumble
A lot of those possessions above had penalties that would add to the dominance that Wimberley had in the trenches and giving Canyon Lake more yardage needed to keep those drives going.
In starting the second half, the Hawks, would have the ball first and with good field position on their own 44 yard line Canyon Lake showed life in starting this drive.
After a first down run by Micah St. John for 12 yards to start the drive, CL would have a 3rd down in needing 3 yards for a first. A motion penalty quickly had the Hawks going backwards again and needing 8 yards to convert. Fulton would recover his own fumble and now needing 9 yards to convert on a 4th down.
Fulton would fake the punt and found a wide open Heath McDonough for 17 yards to keep the drive alive. Another 10 yard run by St. John had the Hawks humming with a new set of downs knocking on Wimberley’s door at the 15 yard line.
A huge defensive play for Wimberley and a Hawk carry for -2 yards had CL still having a chance for making this a one possession game.

Next play was a carbon copy of a run for -2 yards and now having the ball on the 19 yard line needing 14 for a first. A jet sweep would not work as the Texan’s defense continued their dominance and with a 4th down and 23 yards needed to continue this drive.
Another 5 yard penalty would set the Hawks back on their 28 yard line and now what was an excellent chance for a score had a 21 yard pass to Heath McDonough but that would still leave CL needing 7 yards.
Wimberley would take their next drive 93 yards to paydirt and a 17 point lead on a 13 play drive that also took 5 precious minutes off the clock.

Canyon Lake was not finished as the the Hawks started on the Texans 41 yard line and two plays later a Hawk score to creep back to within 10 points for new life.
It was another touchdown pass play for Fulton as he found a wide open Austin Brennan for the catch and run covering 39 yards and still enough time for a comeback.
The 4th Quarter would be a stanza that had Wimberley controlling the clock and after a Hawk interception the Texans would form a victory formation and started making measurements on where that Devil’s Back-Bone Trophy would be displayed with this win.
Canyon Lake will now face a short week with a kick-off on Thursday against Lampasas and now needing to shore up some shortcomings by working on getting their offense and defense back in sync.
