Canyon Lake’s Cross Country team was one of the sports to go from a tough district to an impossible district after the realignment of schools.

The Hawks district was tough with La Vernia and other schools last year, but CL’s Boys team did qualify for Regions both years.

This year, Canyon Lake’s district has two schools ranked in the top 10 and another school that has had quality group of athletes.

Boerne and Fredericksburg are the two schools in the rankings with Bandera another school that could win other districts if the Greyhounds and Billies were not part of that grouping of athletes.

Canyon Lake has been improving for the past few years and now being thrown into this district will make it hard to reach what was done the past two years even if their times have improved.

This past Saturday, CL was in a Meet that had several student start showing some personal bests as the district meet looms in a couple of weeks.

“We did really well,” Head Coach MaryBeth Gallagher said. “Almost everyone set a personal best today which means our training and hard work is working.”

The Hawk’s Girls have also added some great athletes from Mountain Valley last year when Kaitlyn Yuill reached her high school years.

“Kaitlyn Yuill finished 8th out of over 100 varsity girls which she medaled,” Coach Gallagher said glowingly. “Her time was 12:54 and it was her best of the season.”

That is saying a lot as Yuill would on many teams be running on a Junior Varsity group and finishing this high gives you a glimpse of how good of an athlete this young lady is and will be.

“Kaitlyn is poised to finish in the top 10 at district which would qualify her for Regionals.”

Matt Bell ran a 5:15 in the mile run and 11:37.51 for the 3200 meter run last year for the Hawk Track Team and these runners will all be counted on for getting more points when that sport starts in the spring.

“Matt Bell finished 12th out of 105 varsity boy runners,” Coach Gallagher continued. “His time was 17:45 and he is the first of our boys to break 18 minutes.”

Mountain Valley will have some more exceptional athletes coming up the pipeline as there are some encouraging signs with this group of students.

“We had a middle school 7th grade girl finish first out of 113 7th grade girls,” Gallagher gushed. “Her name is Alyssa Sanchez and her time was 13:22…..this was a great meet for our Hawks with lots of personal bests for these kids.”
