CL Lady Hawks Look to Finish Strong at Area Meet

Alysha Perez is ready for fast times at Area Meet

Canyon Lake will be hosting the Area Track Meet this Wednesday as the Hawk Ladies will be searching a chance for another meet in Kingsville if they can qualify with a 4th place or better.

This Area Meet will consist of District 28-4A and District 27-4A schools after the athletes qualified with a 4th or better time, throw, or jump in their district meets two weeks ago.
“I am very optimistic in having the largest number of qualifiers to make it to the regional meet in my 4 years of being the head girls coach,” John Barthels stated. “The girls are working hard every day to get better and to have their best times and distances of the year happen on Wednesday at home at the area track meet.”

The Hawks will possess their best chance of advancing as all three relays had two wins and one second place finish.

There will be 9 other events that will have a Hawk participating and this season the odds have been increased as CL had a 1st or 2nd place finish in 5 of those 9 events.

Skylar Hurst will headline this meet with her name being entered in 5 of those chances for going to Kingsville.

Hurst finished First in 3 of the events and after checking on District 27 results, there was only one athlete with a better time in the 200 meter dash from Wimberley. Hurst had the best time in the 400 meter dash and Audrey Schulze is right in the thick of things for that event.

Alysha Perez has one athlete from La Vernia who was able to have a better time in her district than the time Perez finished with.

Perez still has the best overall time as her 1st place 100 meter dash time was a half second slower than her best result earlier in Lockhart.

Madison Churbe will join Hurst in the 200 meter dash and she presently ranks 4th of the 8 runners coming out of those district meets.

positioned themselves for a chance of making Kingsville on their first try.

Alyssa Strickland who was brought up to Varsity for her last two meets has the best mark in the 100 meter hurdle event. A repeat of that performance would have her ticket punched for a ride towards the Valley.

Lainee Moses pulled out a great run in district when she ran a 48.09 in the 300 meter hurdles. That was just one tenth of a second away from the 2nd best time in Hawk history.

Two of the freshman above, Churbe and Moses, will have a chance of advancing with the relays too.

Churbe will be entered in two relays, 100 & 200, and Moses will have another chance of continuing in the 4×400 relay.

On the 4×100 relay, Canyon Lake is second to La Vernia and the 200 relay, the Hawks, trail that Wimberley team by a whopping 2 seconds.

CL’s 4×400 relay team placed 2nd in district and will look to pass Fredericksburg while those Lady Texan’s have the hill-country crown by 6 seconds over your Hawks.

Don’t forget you have to finish in the top 4 and Canyon Lake would be 3rd if this event repeated itself from those times during district.

In the Field events, the Hawks will have to be on their game for moving into the 4th place or above criteria.

Jade Lawless improved several feet in placing 4th in the Discus and now will need another throw that can put her near the 100 mark, her distance in district was, 91-10 so she is in the neighborhood.

Hurst will need to do the same with her Triple Jump and High Jump as both districts have several

athletes at or above the marks that Skylar pulled off in Fredericksburg.

Amber Leach had a 3rd place in district and she will need to get to that 10 foot height for having a chance to advance.

These field events have a way of evening out many athletes as it does not take a lot to keep one of the best ladies sitting on the sideline after a foul. Churbe had one of the best long jumps and high jumps going into district and a bad day will keep her on the sideline this week.

Canyon Lake does have a chance of sending their most athletes to Region in their short history.

Seniors Hannah Young and Carley Dubois will be active in the Relays as they lend their all for the Hawks.

CL’s Track team has won meets this year and now will see what all that hard work had produced.

“It is all of their determination and will that they are in the position that they are in,” Coach Barthels closed.
