Hawk Count Down with # 7th: CL Hawks 42 Austin Akins 20
Next up for this year’s Top Ten was how well CL’s Football game with Austin Akins.
Canyon Lake had started the year strong but suffered two losses in a row and not knowing what a 6A team would bring to the table had some concerns for coaches and fans.
Akins was not a formidable team but drawing from many more students might pose a problem before games started in district play next up.
Canyon Lake had 7 wins with their football team this year and so picking games that ranked for this composite Best Of games would be tougher.
The ReSporter picked the Austin Akins for the next on the list of Top-Ten contests as this was a different animal for the Hawks as the Eagles were part of the 6A fraternity.
An offense like the Slot-T is not used with larger schools and having an offense that relies on running while doing your best to hide the ball would do this 6A school in, as Akins was celebrating their Homecoming festivities.
This was a total win on both sides of the ball as the offense would finish the game with their 3rd
best yardage output ever while, defensively, the Hawks held the Eagles to 232 yards which was a huge accomplishment.
With a game before district play and CL looking like they might be ready for a challenge would prove to be too much as Akins looked like a team that was ready to go dancing rather than a game of football.
CL’s offense had the Eagles’ defense guessing all night and if this game had been played in Las Vegas, then Akins would be going home with empty pockets.
The Eagles would be glad they are not in a smaller division where there might be chances of facing more than one Slot-T club.
Coach Drum would be worried about this game as it was scheduled during the middle of the season and playing a larger school might not play into CL’s hands as the Eagles would have an advantage with depth and a Hawk injury would not be what the Dr. ordered with district play beginning that next week.
It was apparent that Canyon Lake played the second half close to the vest and being smart about controlling the game that allowed an 8 point 2nd Half advantage and final score, 42-20.
Canyon Lake would average
This was one of CL’s best games of the season that involved both the offense and defense playing at a high level which would spell doom for Akins as they would not have a fun homecoming dance after being dominated by the Hawks.
