The battle for the Backbone will be entering the 3rd year as both schools are currently tied with a win a piece after a Texan win last year.
This should be a good battle as both teams have winning records with each playing a game with Giddings, that will give a casual fan a good idea of which team might have the advantage going into this season’s contest.
Wimberley had the best defensive effort for any Hawk opponent last year in their victory. The Hawks could not get a rushing game going, which if you have not noticed, is the bread and butter for the Hawks.
If the Hawks cannot get this part of their game on track then this could be another long night for the home team. CL has a 2-2 home record in this series as your Hawks have won the last two home games.
To continue that 2 game winning streak at home, Canyon Lake will need to bring their ‘A’ game defensively. A tougher defense would allow CL to afford some offensive hiccups and help bring the Back-Bone Trophy back to the CLHS halls.
The Hawks did have their best passing game yardage wise last week when they finished just 4 yards under the 200 threshold. That was the most yards through the air since Canyon Lake changed their offense to the Slot-T back in 2013.
Jo Jo Weeks will be taking snaps for the Texans that have high aspirations for this year with hopes of making some long tracks in the post-season.
Wimberley has started their climb back to where they have been on many occasions and now CL will have a tough hurdle to clear in realizing a victory.
This will be Homecoming for the Hawks and that might be an impetus for Canyon Lake as they will look to continue the offense that amassed 406 yards in the second half in last week’s loss.
The Hawks will just have to solve how to have that yardage realized as points on the scoreboard.
That casual fan just cannot overlook the same team that played both team in Giddings.
Wimberley was in control of that contest while Canyon Lake was battling uphill throughout the game. This tidbit certainly gives the Texans a leg up for a prognosticator to pick the visiting team.
That overused statement, ‘Throwing all the records out the window for a rivalry game’, will be tough for Canyon Lake to make that statement come true. But that is why they play the games and that will certainly be the case this Friday.
Welcome our friends from Wimberley and we will Pray that their road back home will be on a straight Back-Bone.
Go Hawks!
