Lady Hawk’s Basketball Season Tips-Off this Week

Head Basketball Coach Zach Burleson

Canyon Lake will start their 2nd Season, under the helm of Coach Burleson,  this week on Friday when San Antonio Brooks Academy comes to the Hawk Nest to open the season.

Last year’s team had a lot of young players and you could see players Freshman on Varsity/Junior Varsity/Freshman teams. All three groups of players upped their game as you could see a smile on Coach Zach Burleson’s face, knowing that the future could bring some much needed infusion for Basketball.

A year later and seeing improvement will be good to see as the proverbial, lot’s of potential, will be on stage this season to see if that potential can be translated to wins.

The ReSporter had a chance to catch up with Coach Burleson for a Coaches Corner.

The ReSporter: What are your thoughts on the team after your scrimmage this past Saturday?

Hill Country Furnishings says Go HawksCoach Burleson: “I felt like the varsity had good intensity the first 10 minutes. We need to be able to sustain that energy for 32. So we will continue to work on that.
I thought the jvs played really well for this early. Jimmy has them going strong.”

The ReSporter: What or who are some new girls that we have not seen?

Coach Burleson: “Pretty much the same faces. Our young girls will see more action as they are maturing into their roles. Last years freshmen group will be counted on a lot this year.”

The ReSporter: It seemed to me that the girls were dialed in on your instructions from the sideline, do you feel this group of ladies are more comfortable going into their 2nd year with you at the helm?

Coach Burleson: “I think so. We are now adding the rest of what we will do. So it’s been easier now that our base is more established. We are making some adjustments to better fit our personnel based on what our district looks like.”

The ReSporter: Looking at your schedule how will you be helped in games played to ready the team for district play?

Coach Burleson: “We have some good challenges throughout the schedule. Got our traditional games with Wimberley and Navarro along with some new games, like Boerne Champion. Our tournament schedule still features a tough one in NB/Canyon with a chance to play schools we don’t see often in Austin Crockett and Comfort.”

The ReSporter: Will the Lady Hawks be doing any pressing this season?

Coach Burleson: “We are working on it in hopes to up the tempo at times.”

The ReSporter: Give us your thoughts on the Seniors and their leadership?

Coach Burleson: “Reagan, Skylar, Char and Alexa. Each has stepped up and led early on. They are supportive of all the rest of the girls and we have a positive environment.”

Alayna-Gayle says Go Lady Hawks!

The ReSporter: You only lost one to two players to graduation, how does form a traffic jam for ladies wanting to get on the Varsity?

Coach Burleson: “We miss Mia. She had a great year for us last year. And you’re right, only one spot opens up. Hopefully we will develop some depth because we will need everybody contributing to be successful. All of our varsity players have to be ready to go. Our lineups are fluid.”

The ReSporter: With that same thought process is that an optimal benefit with the players competing each day for a chance to make varsity?

Coach Burleson: “It is. The way we are constructed, starting doesn’t mean you’re playing more than a nonstarter. We have multiple girls playing multiple positions. That will benefit us later when we need to adjust lineups based on matches.”

The ReSporter: Thanks Coach….see you on Friday!
