Canyon Lake has a one game history book on Pleasanton as the Hawks played the Eagles in a Bi-District round and won, 24-21 during the 2013 season.
That was one of those years with a slow start but with a 3 game winning streak during district play would give Canyon Lake another season that would last for two more contests. Pleasanton’s team was not a fan of the Slot-T offense back during this period as Navarro had their way with the Eagles the year before with a, 76-49 loss to those Panthers in the playoffs.
CL held Pleasanton to their lowest offensive output 4 years ago and had just enough in their tank for a 3 point win.
That year would have two teams that both teams played to give a good barometer of how that night might progress. Suffice to say, that Eagle team might have been looking a game ahead as the Hawks ended their regular season with a 62-0 loss to Navarro and only 2 losses.
This time, these two combatants have no common opponent and assessing your strength or weakness will be bit harder in the grand scheme of things.
These Eagles have a Junior signal caller in Johnny Zamora and by this time of the campaign, putting a Senior or Junior in front of a name could easily be called a Senior with several games already under your belt.
Zamora is responsible for 70% of the Eagles total yardage and that will give you an idea of the importance of this quarterback. With his 120 yards of rushing being an indicator that Zamora can avoid trouble enough times to be in a positive yardage to this point.
With only two interceptions, Pleasanton will not turn the ball over in that manner if at all while throwing 30 touchdowns. Or 20% of their completions will have the Referees throwing their hands into the air to signal that a touchdown has been made.
Isaac Mendiola leads the Eagles with 821 yards receiving on 46 catches. He will be joined with two other receivers with a respectable 33 and 30 receptions in Dalton Hobbs and Jordan Bosquez. Hobbs will be the receiver getting more explosive plays as he averages 26 yards per catch and leads the team with 13 touchdowns.
Bosquez will be the first down receiver with a 12 yards per catch ratio with only 2 touchdowns.
Pleasanton will run 57% of the time and that is a very equal amount to keep a defense guessing on many occasions.
Austin Renner will be the workhorse rusher as he has 648 yards. for about a 4 yards per carry average.
CL Hawks had 3 games where a turnover was committed and Pleasanton had just one game where they did not force a turnover and that game was a 50-0 victory. Turnovers will be a telling sign as the team that likes to force will be battling against a school that has not had that happen much if at all.
Two fumbles in the Giddings loss and two interceptions in the contest last week will have CL in a position of knowing how important this facet will and can be in determining a win or loss.
Pleasanton’s game had Rock-port with 3 lost fumbles, that benefitted the Eagles, as the Pirates run the same offense as Canyon Lake. In 4 of the last 6 games, the Eagles, have forced 2 or more turnovers and one of those games was their loss to Somerset.
Canyon Lake does not come into this game like they did during the 2013 year as this Hawk team has reached the 9 win total while that doubles the wins the ’13 team finished with (4). This Hawk team has a defense that has done a good job of slowing down passing teams.
That will be the key on this night for CL, as the defense will need to take care of business and get enough stops for the offense to get on some long drives, with the longest drive coming by going to the 3rd round of playoffs.
It is said that a drive like that will be like driving in the hill-country. Go Hawks!!
