CL Hawks Play at Full Strength in Win over Luling, 63-36

Canyon Lake had all hands on deck with their win over the Luling Eagles on Tuesday night at the

Coach Chapman planning strategy in Hawk Victory

Hawk Nest, 63-36.

With the Hawk football team going further into the season would be a detriment for the basketball crew as those weeks practicing outside with an oblong ball would cramp those time needed to prepare for the game that requires a round ball.

Michael Harwell, Ben Fulton, and Andrew Nelson were wearing a different uniform that would help in securing this victory.

“It was a really good win for us,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “We did a lot of good things and were able to rotate and play a bunch of bodies….It was good that Harwell was able to get in there and play a bunch to get back in the groove so to speak.”

Harwell was able to start with a double/double with 11 points combined with 14 rebounds. Those type of numbers will certainly add an element to the Hawks on how they can attack opponents as this season continues through this month of December.

CL’s defense was able to hold the Eagles to a 23% shooting percentage which would play a part in getting 25 defensive boards to set up the Hawks offensive game that finished with 63 points.

Junior Parker Mott continued his strong offensive game with 14 points as Mott can score in all three phrases of the game, while on this night, he was on from the charity stripe while sinking 7 of 8 shots.

The Hawks had Sam Schimank with double figure scoring as he finished with 10 points as his long range shooting was a welcome sight.

Canyon Lake was able to get separation from Luling by outscoring the Eagles by 14 points during the second period and then following that quarter with a 24 point output after halftime that allowed CL to coast for a 27 point victory.

Coach Chapman was able to coax 10 players with 10 or more minutes of playing time while getting all 14 players some time on the hard wood.

“I was really proud of how hard we played and the energy we played with,” Coach Chapman continued. “This is a really fun bunch to coach, and it was good to have everyone with us tonight. Everyone who got minutes contributed and played well, and that’s what we are going to need. We have a lot of bodies, so some guys may not play a whole bunch from night to night, but if everyone can just be really good at their role and what we are asking them to do, that is going to help a ton.”

                     Go Hawks!!

There are always things a coach can find for improvement during the early stages of any sport and Coach Chapman was focused on what this group will need to improve on as they prepare for the Canyon Lake Tournament that will start up this week.

“We still had too many turnovers and gave up too many offensive rebounds, but those are things we can fix and improve upon,” Coach Chapman closed. “As long as we keep playing with the energy and competitive spirit that we talk about, we can be really good.”

The Hawks will start tournament play with Ingram Moore at 10:30am this Friday at the Hawk Nest. Lockhart will be next up on that same day with a contest starting at 1:30pm for the round robin tourney.
