Hawks Goose Egg the Mustangs, 22-0

Canyon Lake scored all the points needed on a 5 play drive covering 56 yards to start this game and Connor Rose ran 19 yards to pay-dirt and a 7 point lead.
The Hawks added a 26 yard field goal off the foot of Trenton Lorett and finished off that first quarter with a 44 yard run by Jacob Ruff, 16-0

That 16 point first quarter was a thing of beauty, but those final 3 quarters showed the Coaches that there is still a lot of work to do to realize their dream for this year.
“We survived,” Head Coach Charley Drum said. “We are not as deep or experienced but we played well and everybody has to be ready and we will work on that in practice this next week.”
Coach Drum spoke of having several key players not being able to finish the contest which caused a wave of students that would get a call to go into action.
“A shut-out is always a good goal and a good starting point,” Coach Drum finished. “We will have to get better every week.”
Defensively, The Lake, swarmed Marble Falls through much of this contest and stood strong to finish with their 4th game of keeping an opponent without a score. Blanco was the opening game recipient last year that came away with goose eggs. Four shut-outs since CL started football 113 games ago.
This Mustang team had a hard time getting traction and finished with a one yard per carry night.
Canyon Lake’s defense was on, to start this season, by giving up just 137 yards of offense which ranks as the 6th best in Hawk history for total defense and the 2nd best night against the run.

Marble Falls’ first drive started in good shape covering 16 yards in two plays and then the hooves fell off the Mustangs with their next three plays retreating 21 yards now needing 31 yards for a first. J T Greene had back to back sacks during that sequence.
Jacob Ruff rushed for 156 yards in win over Marble Falls
On MF’s first punt, Lorett had a return for 26 yards and now needing 49 yards for a score. That they did, in 6 plays, with a Lorett field goal. Jacob Ruff had the big play with a 24 yard run and then a Caleb Almond 13 yard jaunt continued the onslaught.
The Mustangs were sacked on their next possession by Nathan DeLeon and that forced a punt giving The Lake the ball once more for a quick score, when Ruff, covered 44 yards and a 16 point Hawk lead.
Ruff finished the game rushing for 156 yards on just 13 carries. A 12 yard per carry night will play in any league. To go along with some snaps at linebacker.
“All of our Seniors wanted to lead our younger guys,” Ruff recounted. “We have a lot of first time starters.”
Ruff was active on both sides of the ball and his linebacking side helped in keeping MF without a score, “We watched film on them and we saw if you can get on them quick then they can get discouraged.”
After that score, both teams would go into the doldrums as both school’s defense would prove to be the more advanced side of the ball in this early season game.
Canyon Lake finished that first half with 175 yards but could only muster 90 more yards for the night in that second half of play.
Italian Garden says Go Hawks!!
A final score in the 4th quarter had the Hawks covering 71 yards with the big play coming from Ruff when he took the hidden ball for 30 yards, that converted a 2nd down and 24 yards needed to keep the drive going.
Tristan Chacon finished this drive with a great end run snaking the last 6 yards near the home side-line and a score, 22-0.
The Mustangs had one more chance to scratch a score starting on their 33 yard line. MF converted two 3rd down plays on the drive and found themselves on the Hawk 1 yard line. A center snap sailed over the QB’s head and Canyon Lake would jump on that Mustang, like a June Bug on a Peach.
That errant snap put MF needing 23 yards for a score and with two incompletions, the visitors would be out of steam and having goose eggs to show for their offensive woes.
Alex Hardin helped chip in with the rest of The Hawks Defense
Defensive End, Alex Hardin, had his named called several times for this defensive juggernaut, “We played really well and I was proud of our intensity and effort and I am glad we were able to shut them out.”
Hardin continued, “They played like we game planned for, so there was nothing that surprised us….we will need to work in our practices and fix mistakes and become accountable and focus on beating our next opponent.”
This is the second year that Canyon Lake started their season by shutting out an opponent and will now see what might be in store this next week when your Hawks welcome Pfluggerville Weiss to the Hawk Nest.
