CLJV Hawks make Taylor look Daffy in, 18-0 Win
Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity completed the Hawks sweep of their games played in Taylor on Thursday night after a Devyn Placeres 226 yard rushing night that downed the Ducks, 18-0.
CL’s first drive stalled on Taylor’s 15 yard line but there were signs of a dam breaking with some explosive plays from Placeres (29 yards), Kolton Belcher (16 yards), and a 14 yard jaunt by Patrick Almond.
During that first half, the Ducks, had 4 drives that included 4 punts and their last drive ending with a half-time horn.
Meanwhile, Canyon Lake would score twice in that same time frame with the help of two break-away runs of 60 and 69 yards for Placeres helping to set up those two touchdowns.
Noah Du Menil would score what would be the winning TD on an 8 yard up the middle run and Kolton Belcher called his on number for his 1 yarder with both scores coming at the end of each quarter.
Taylor mustered a total of 69 yards in the first half while Canyon Lake’s explosive plays were 4th of July(ish) for the Hawks in covering 257 yards of real estate.
Canyon Lake started on defense to the 2nd half and Taylor made a statement breaking their first snap for 50 yards down the home-field sideline.
That play was highlighted by Colten Cunningham who was able to chase down the open field Duck Running Back that stopped the runner for a 50 yard run to CL’s 25 yard line. That tackle would keep Canyon Lake with a 12 point lead because Taylor was only able to accumulate a negative 2 yards on their next 4 plays.
“I thought I had the angle,” Cunningham said calmly. “I just know that I needed to keep him from scoring and he broke through the middle and I just said I got to go.”
Go, Cunningham did and seeing how every play is important and not giving up that would save a score.
Daniel Garcia wore the jersey of Taylor’s QB with a 9 yard sack that snuffed any chance of a score to end that once promising drive. Taylor would not get any closer to pay-dirt for this game after that saving tackle and grounding these Ducks making them look Daffy.
“It felt good,” Garcia said on what it felt like in getting to the Duck’s QB. “I just felt the blood flowing and made me feel like a land shark…we just controlled and won the line of scrimmage.”
Canyon Lake would burn the rest of this quarter with a touchdown drive that covered 73 yards and capped off when Placeres took it in from 29 yards for the win.
These Ducks were Dominated by CL’s Defense and an offense that averaged 9.3 yards per tote and the win.
Placeres totaled 6 explosive runs for 207 yards as continued the firework show that would only be entertaining to the Hawk faithful in attendance.

“It was because of all of those blocks by the offensive line,” Placeres said while thinking on how many explosive plays he enjoyed. “I knew where I needed to go and it was very exciting after I got off and kept running.” Was there any looking over your shoulders on those break-a-ways? “I just kept running and never looked back.”
Canyon Lake’s JV will be back in action next Thursday when they travel to Burnet with a goal of going 2-0 in District 14-4A Division I play.
