Hawk’s Junior Varsity Feast on Burnet Bulldogs, 25-14
The Hawks Junior Varsity improve their District 14-4A record to 2-0 after dominating Burnet on a rainy evening at Bulldog Stadium, 25-14.
CL gave up a kick-off return and a last quarter score to the Bulldogs while taking that last drive out of the numbers allowing 40 yards during the competitive portion of this contest.
CLJV took their opening drive 66 yards and 8 plays when Derek Wiatrek scooted 5 yards to score one of his three touchdowns and put the Hawks in what was the winning score as The Lake never trailed.
Wiatrek led Canyon Lake with 98 yards while Devyn Placeres followed up his 240 rushing yards last week with another solid 81 steps in this win.
Special teams was hot and cold and that 90 yard kick-off return was countered when Ty Martinez used his speed with a 65 yard punt return that all but buried the JV Bulldogs with a, 19-7 lead.
“The ball bounced right to my hands and then I saw two players an one missed me,” Martinez started bout his punt return. “I just started running and took one step to the inside and then I jumped to the outside and just kept running.”
It was certainly a two step return as this punt started with the Bulldog punter having to pick the ball up on the snap which had almost every Hawk going for the ball leaving Martinez as a lone Hawk with little blocking help on this play.
Meanwhile CL’s defense was not allowing any positive movement from the home team while giving up 25 yards in that first half. That would barely be enough yards to get your pet Bulldog out in your back yard to do his business.
Burnet ended the game with a messy home as their Bulldog would not be able to break out to get business done. With just 1.6 yards per rush and a passing offense that had an anemic 2.7 yards per pass attempt. That would spell a good strategy for another district win.
CL’s Seth Moss had his hand on these Bulldogs with one coming with a sack that resulted in an 8 yard loss.
“I started this morning in my game day on being focused,” Moss left no stone unturned. “Everybody was hungry and we wanted to get full by tackling and getting our defense up and we did a good job tonight.”
If this was a game that required the defense to get full based on tackles behind the line of scrimmage then there would be no need for Coaches to feed this group after this contest.
Canyon Lake had just one play that would allow Burnet to score after a 29 yard pass play that helped set up Burnet on CL’s 9 yard line and score 4 plays later.
After that offensive touchdown for Burnet, CL’s offense would run out the last 7:33 on the clock with the Hawks residing on Burnet’s 25 yard line when the game ended.
Placeres helped The Lake’s fourth quarter score that ballooned the lead to 18 points with a 38 yard jaunt after taking just 3 plays to score on a Wiatrek 18 yard run up the middle that would let the Bulldog’s know this game would soon be history.
Canyon Lake never let up on either side of the ball and will now have a date with Fredericksburg next Thursday at home and as this Hawk defense will look to show off how they will get full on Billies when they come to the Hawk table.
Go Hawks and feast on the Billes for Lunch!!
